Enable them to quickly understand and solve problems with strong basic knowledge. A tutor can help a student to set high expectations and work towards them, making their stuggle easier. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student to help them learn is to make the subject/topic approachable. From personal experience learning in the past, even the subtlest differences in teaching methods greatly affect a student's interest and capacity to learn. As such I believe a tutor should try their best to make the subject…

-I believe it is a tutor's duty to make sure the student understands the concept thoroughly and precisely as possible,. -A tutor can always jump to the basics of a particular concept if it is not clear for the student. This is mostly not possible in a classroom. -Last but not the least, be a good listener and patient with the students. -Time…

A tutor can notice the student's strength and nourish it through a structured set of activities that the student can do in class as well as independently. A tutor can also notice the areas of student's weaknesses and supply the student with a learning program that can tackle these weaknesses gradually and methodically. Additionally, a tutor is a…

I believe it is important for a tutor to provide a wide range of examples for students to be able to grasp certain concepts. Furthermore, applications in the real world of the various concepts the students are learning are incredibly valuable, as it gives them a greater sense of purpose, knowing well what they are studying is not just to tick the…

A good tutor should be all about building up a student's confidence, giving them helpful feedback, and providing personalized support. Boosting a student's self-belief is important because it makes them more motivated to learn. Giving feedback that's not just critical but also positive helps them see their strengths and areas to work on. And…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to recognise that all kids are different with unique skills and needs. This means adopting a personalised approach to tutoring wherein the tutor employs teaching methods and materials that are best suited to the individual child. This helps the child to feel understood and allows…

I believe building a relationship with the student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student, as it allows the tutor to recognize that each student has their own unique learning styles. These can only be identified during a session when a rapport between the student and tutor is established, and once this connection is made…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is collaboration. Being able to communicate, preparing early on and mapping out what the students require is essential to being a good tutor. A tutor’s most important role is to help a student truly understand the concepts rather than just memorising answers. I believe that teaching students a syllabus and helping them achieve their grades is only part of a tutor's job. The most important thing is to provide clarity and build a student’s independence. A tutor should identify where a student is struggling and give them the specific tool, whether it's a math formula or a study technique, to solve problems on their own. It’s about being a reliable resource they can trust. My strengths are my versatility and my…

Inside MalabarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked through multiplication and division of fractions as well as applying their understanding to perimeter and area in geometry using visual examples.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on solving inequalities and graphing them on number lines, then expanded her skills by practicing shortcuts for multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James tackled trigonometry concepts alongside bivariate data analysis, with targeted exam prep questions to reinforce application and interpretation of results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer setting out—"Setting out still needs work"—making it harder to catch errors in multi-step maths.

For a Year 10 English task, last-minute communication meant the tutor only learned about an assessment deadline on the day it was due; as noted, "Student has unfortunately relayed information that their assessment was due that very day."

In senior maths (Year 12), anxiety and lack of confidence led to hesitancy in tackling new topics, which left the student feeling overwhelmed rather than progressing steadily through compound interest questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malabar noted that a Year 9 student, who previously hesitated to ask for clarification, is now openly seeking help when confused and has started correcting mistakes independently after feedback.

In a recent high school session, one student showed new independence by recalling formulas from memory and successfully applying them to solve equations without prompts—last term, this same student struggled with remembering steps.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who once rushed through mental maths tasks now takes time to set out work logically and checks each answer before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Sports High School.
