I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

Establish the appropriate attitude towards studying. A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Learning can be intimidating, especially when a student lacks confidence, so it's important to be patient, supportive, and genuinely interested in their progress. A great tutor doesn't…

I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

I believe that the overarching role of a tutor is to have a lasting, positive impact on a student, and this is possible through various means. Firstly, they can support the student academically, by guiding them through difficult or foreign concepts step-by-step. Through this, a tutor can immensely improve a student's self-confidence and engagement…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

A tutor is sometimes like the symbol of the subject he teaches. A tutor's determination and his ability to make the subject interesting measures which extent the student is engaged to the subject. Although different students has different abilities and weakness, a tutor has a responsibility to find the students' strengths and weakness in the…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. I think a good tutor also needs to be patient and encouraging, especially when a student is struggling, because…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

To build their confidence in the subject, If they feel they are not able to complete a section and lose motivation they should be shown that they absolutely can, and to not give up. Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
