The most important thing I can do for a student is providing the tools and resources to be able to tackle problems independently, no matter the difficulty. To do this, it is important to design personalised methodologies that allow students to learn the basic knowledge, get familiar with some examples and then put into practice what was learned…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create clarity, and inspire motivation. A good tutor doesn’t just explain answers — they guide students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. By being patient, encouraging, and consistent, tutors help students feel supported and capable. I also…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Ensuring that a student has confidence and self belief can be just as…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that the student feels they are being listened to and meeting their needs. For example, it is essential to work at the pace of your student, if your student only wants to pass their subject it is your job to make sure they are best suited for that to happen. Or if your student…

Understanding and patience, some students lack knowledge of basic concepts and require a boost, so it's important to tailor tutoring styles to each student, whether that is written examples or oral analogies, especially in the Maths and Sciences. I believe a tutor should teach a student how to love a subject instead of do it. For a student to be able to realise why they adore the subject and why they are studying it in the first place. A tutor should try their best to allow their students to feel like they are in a safe place, where they can ask any questions and feel free without feeling…

A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. Inside ManningTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie focused on solving linear equations, including those involving fractions and progressively challenging questions.

For Year 9, Mae worked through stem-and-leaf plots and explored measures of central tendency using real data sets.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Sarah practiced converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, applying these skills to everyday ratio problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student arrived without a formula sheet, which meant advanced chemistry problems couldn't be attempted; "we had to stick to basic practice," as noted.

In Year 8 maths, missed homework was highlighted twice before the break—2.5 hours set but not yet completed.

For a Year 10 English essay, facing the full draft caused overwhelm: ideas stalled until structure was broken into smaller steps.

During Year 9 algebra, skipping written working led to sign errors in linear equations that went unnoticed at first glance. In these moments, confidence dipped and momentum slowed as gaps became more visible.

Recent Achievements

One Manning tutor noticed that Mae, a Year 10 student, has started to persist with 3D geometry problems despite previously sharing how much she struggled to visualise them—last week, she worked through half and quarter cylinder questions without giving up.

Charlie (Year 11) had been making small errors in coordinate geometry but recently completed a full set independently of complex ratio and backwards-solving tasks for the first time.

In English, a high school student who was often hesitant about essay writing produced a solid response on their own and began asking for new strategies to tackle exam questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manning Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Manning Primary School.
