I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is provide every opportunity for them to kindle their own knowledge. As Socrates said, "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." In other words, it is the tutor's job to introduce new knowledge as the base tools and then question the student to allow them to…

Providing personalized teaching and assistance to a student is one of the most important services a tutor can offer. Through clear communication, and developing a encouraging learning environment, a tutor can engage the student in a way that is not available to them in a classroom. I am patient and encouraging with those who are learning. I…

To be there to listen to the student. Likewise, to be there to communicate with the student, and be willing to make compromising in learning styles to find the most effective teaching method for the student. I believe I am a strong communicator, with great patience. Similarly, I behave with empathy and integrity with the people around me, and…

I believe that a tutor should foster a student's confidence in their capability to learn, and should inspire students to feel motivated and excited to learn. This is the most important thing a tutor can provide for a student as it fosters a love of learning, which develops one's intellectual agency, assisting and empowering them to navigate one's…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to adapt in the way they teach. Every student learns differently, and it is vital to ensure that the tutor teaches in a way that allows the student to learn most effectively. My biggest strength as a tutor is my friendly personality. Over the years that I have done coaching and…

To help students understand what they can do or what options they have when they have questions or problems is important. Exclusively giving answers and solutions doesn't help students think critically and understand clearly. Instead, allowing students to figure out what they should do or comprehend certain ideas deeply would be something…

A tutor must understand the learner is still human, my collaboration skills allow me to see past age or education level. Tutors must see that they have specific ways they can learn best, therefore assessing the child as a human with capabilities comes first. This allows the learner to take in the information in the best way possible. Giving…

I consider tutoring to be important in two ways: academics and self-growth. Being a tutor to me means bringing out the best in someone academically as well as providing them with the tools they need to become independent, life-long learners. I think a great tutor is someone who can help their student grow to love and appreciate the subject of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be is patient and supportive. As tutors, we have already completed these subjects, and so we know the 'pressure points' and ways to deal with them. It is our job to pass on this knowledge and help others. If someone is receiving tutoring, most often they are struggling with one or more parts of a topic…

Teach them how to learn in the most efficient and effective manner. This is because once you understand how you learn, you can learn anything. I think it’s important for students to find a study strategy that works for them. I think it's important for a tutor to introduce different strategies and methods to their students. Moreover, the overall focus should be on helping students understand how and why things work, rather than relying solely on memorising formulas or definitions. I’m…

In my opinion, tutors can help students in setting goals and achieve them from time to time. As a leader, they need to implement situational leadership and try to incorporate different teaching methods for different kinds of students. My strengths would basically include my communication skills and assertiveness with the students. In addition, I…

Inside Marble HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alyssia explored titration calculations in chemistry, focusing on molar ratios and rearranging the n = m/M and C = n/V equations;

Year 9 student Daniel practiced identifying gradients and y-intercepts when finding equations of straight lines, using graph sketches to reinforce concepts;

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student revised the 6 and 7 times tables alongside calculating perimeter and area for simple shapes.

Recent Challenges

A recurring challenge for several students across Years 3–12 was incomplete or missing homework, particularly in mathematics—notes repeatedly flagged unfinished tasks and reminders to complete assigned work.

In a Year 8 algebra session, one student "preferred to look at what she'd already done rather than try and push herself," which slowed her confidence with new types of problems.

For a senior chemistry student, over-reliance on provided equations during molar ratio questions led to hesitation when facing less familiar formats; as the tutor observed, "some reliability on equations, but with more practice he should be able to apply concepts to new questions." This pattern sometimes left revision feeling shallow ahead of tests.

Recent Achievements

One Marble Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after often waiting for hints, he now comes prepared with specific questions and confidently guides each session toward his trickiest maths topics.

In Year 12 chemistry, another student who previously needed step-by-step help with titration equations is now able to solve mixed-ratio problems entirely on her own by the end of each lesson.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to struggle with multi-digit subtraction has begun finishing her homework accurately and even reviews times tables without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Basket Range Primary School.
