I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to help faciliate and devolop an independant learning process. By this I mean helping the student to learn, by not just giving them the answer but by helping them to reach the answer on their own. This way they will be able to do similar probelms in future, without…

Leave them with a proper process with answering questions under time pressure. Make learning if not enjoyable at least tolerable, as learning new things is much harder if you don’t have any interest in it. Make your teaching digestible for the student depending on their level of understanding - not too easy not too hard. Breaking down complex…

The most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student include helping them find confidence in themselves and discovering the ways in which they learn best. If a student wishes to achieve their goals, they must first believe that they have the capacity to do so. Therefore, if a tutor can assist a student in developing the self-confidence…

I believe that it is paramount for a chemistry tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a chemistry tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. Inside MaribyrnongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophia focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers using visual models.

Year 8 student Jack worked through linear equations with two variables and practiced times tables for fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mia tackled trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve worded geometry problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was assigned Algebraic Fractions homework but left it incomplete, which slowed progress during the next session—he needs to finish the assigned homeworks on Algebraic Fractions.

In Year 11 Biology, one learner tended to rely on memorising definitions instead of connecting concepts using textbook readings and key terms; this led to difficulty answering deeper questions.

For a Year 5 student, written working was often skipped in multiplication problems: "thinks a lot in her head. Does not write working out," making it harder for her to catch errors or remember steps later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maribyrnong noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now confidently voices questions when stuck—this change meant he could work through challenging algebraic fractions without guessing.

Another high schooler recently completed a matrix assignment entirely on his own and presented each step clearly for the first time, following earlier struggles with laying out his solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from needing hands-on support for two-digit addition to accurately solving three-digit problems independently and even explaining her steps out loud during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Primary School.
