It is of utter importance that the tutor provisions the required environment for the student to be comfortable. Also, the tutor should consider the circumstances of the student and act accordingly. Furthermore, the tutor must motivate the student to move forward in the subject by increasing the student's confidence in him/herself. The latter can…

I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. The student understands that you want the best for them and in turn will try their best with you. In order to establish this, it is important to understand the pupil's likes, dislikes,…

Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. I think a tutor should be able to have the necessary resources for a student. Extra learning content that students can’t easily retrieve should be available with tutors. I am in a position to provide those resources. I am patient, and I am kind and try to teach in ways that they will enjoy. I also have tricks that I would love to share since…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A teacher can instill courage in the students to learn and study anything they want. The journey of learning what you want is long and it requires passion to undertake that. Here, a high school teacher can build such strong confidence in the students through his own experience that students would never feel bogged down by the stress of future…

Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
