Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build thier confidence, to make them feel supported. Once they become comfortable, they approach more be it for doubt clarification or to better understand a problem or concept. We must also try and simplify complex concepts in a way that they can undestand. More than to help them solve…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help students be confident and believe in themselves. There'll be times they encounter difficult problems or don't get what they expect. It's important to stay positive, believe in your potential to not give up. As a tutor, I'll help them to achieve this by encouraging confidence and…

The most important thing that you can do for a student is to encourage questions and curiosity, to foster a sense of ease and comfort in having doubts, as well as develop a healthy approach to learning in students. I ensure that my students find it easy to speak to me, and I encourage questions. I know that learning comes from a curated…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is spark curiosity—once a student is curious, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. My role is to guide, support, and give them the confidence to keep exploring. My strengths are patience, breaking things into simple steps, and making students feel comfortable asking questions. I also grasp math…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

The most important thing would be to be able to empathise with the student and be not just a tutor but also a mentor. Learning is just as much about building confidence and motivation as it is about acquiring knowledge and understanding. This means being optimistic even when things don't work out as envisioned, and expending extra effort to make…

From my experience, the most impactful lesson a tutor can teach a student is how to research and study on his own in the long run. As Greg Reid once said, "A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes dreams come true." Therefore, I firmly believe that although…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. To make students enjoy the classes, and want them to learn more and get interested in the subject. Classes should not be seen as a boring compulsory activities, in constrast, they should be the channel to make students wiser and more independent. Help students build a structured approach to problem-solving. Solutions can be found online, but it is important to cultivate the right starting point in students' minds, since it is an important skill to have at every level of study. Utmost patience is something I have honed, since I skipped a class when I was in school, and it took a lot of…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. Inside McMahons PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Soraya worked on properties of quadrilaterals and triangles, focusing on congruency tests and identifying information from these, as well as composite area problems using coordinate planes.

In Year 10, Daniel tackled trigonometry revision—including sine rule applications—and also reviewed geometry fundamentals such as angle relationships.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia concentrated on linear algebra through assignment work and revision sessions, plus was introduced to networks and diagrams using visual representations to solidify understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student revised only teacher-provided "easy" questions before an assessment; as a tutor observed, "the areas we worked on less as he felt confident were weaker in the test."

Another high schooler avoided writing out algebraic working for problem-solving, preferring decimals, and hesitated to attempt harder questions.

During a senior Skype lesson, technical issues with note visibility meant steps weren't always clear—making it hard to spot errors together.

In Year 7 geometry, incomplete written revision made it difficult to pinpoint where test marks were lost. Without consistent practice and visible working, misconceptions lingered into assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mcmahons Point recently saw Charlie, a Year 11 student, move from hesitating over box plots to independently constructing them and comparing data sets with accuracy.

In another session, Harry—who used to get stuck on trigonometry—now breezes through complex problems at a steady pace, rarely needing prompts.

Meanwhile, Soraya (Year 4) surprised her tutor by self-correcting an error on her homework without any hints and confidently explained how angles combine to form right or straight lines. She finished the lesson by showing a new way to solve practice test questions using her own strategies.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cameragal Montessori School, North Sydney Campus.
