Be patient with the student when it comes to concepts they struggle with as well as adapting to their skills and ways of learning in order to optimize their efficiency and knowledge. Tutors should also be able to drill life skills into their students such as resilience in not giving up on a hard question. - adaptability in teaching style -…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

A tutor should have good listening skills so that they will better understand students' misconceptions and struggles. It is important to treat each student and how you go about emphasising the content to the students uniquely. A good tutor should aim to be relatable and open to share own experiences with learning and highlight that it isn't an…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. The most important thing a tutor can do wouldn't be to have the answers to every question they have. It would be to teach a student properly so they understand the task properly, so that in the future, they can do it by themselves. It is important to teach students that mistakes often occur and these are crucial, as it allows us to recognise…

Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. The most important thing is building understanding, not just getting to the right answer — a student should walk away knowing why something works, not just what to write down. Patience matters just as much: making sure a student never feels judged for not getting something straight away. And I think a good tutor builds confidence alongside…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

Inside Middle CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Izzy focused on fraction operations and percentages, using revision sheets to pinpoint strengths and gaps.

Year 9 student Ella worked through linear relationships and algebraic equations in preparation for an upcoming topic test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophie revised coordinate geometry concepts, specifically the distance formula and Pythagoras' method for finding interval lengths, applying these to practice problems with diagrams where helpful.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student working on percentages showed good understanding but could increase speed with more targeted practice—slower pacing meant less time for new concepts.

In a senior maths session, a tutor observed "past papers revision must be done," as the student had focused mostly on familiar problems and avoided tackling harder, unfamiliar exam questions.

Another high school student over-complicated ratio tasks, which made timed exam practice stressful and led to unfinished sections.

Meanwhile, in English, one secondary student struggled to develop richer dialogue in creative writing, resulting in flat characters and limited narrative tension.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Middle Cove recently noticed a big shift with Izzy, who used to hesitate before answering but now attempts maths questions independently and is less afraid to share her reasoning out loud.

In Year 12 Physics, Kristina initially felt overwhelmed by Advanced Mechanics, so she worked with the tutor to revisit Trigonometry first—now she's actively identifying concepts that need extra attention each session.

Another high school student, Cael, has moved from sticking to simple story ideas to experimenting with dialogue and character profiles for writing tasks. Last session, he developed a full story outline without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Castlecrag Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School.
