Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. I would love to help students find genuine interest in Maths and Chemistry as much as I did. I try experimenting with…

Such as exam papers from different schools and providing a thorough explanation about the concept they do not understand. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to bring confidence into them. I've learnt though school that it's not the level of intelligence of a student that matters, but their attitude towards the goals. Altering the ‘I can’t do this’ attitude by breaking down the hard topics would enable me to prepare them for the HSC…

With my previous experience both as being a tutor and being tutored by someone else, I believe a tutor should pay a fundamental role in empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Beyond improving marks academically, it’s vital that a tutor can help develop their student’s confidence, motivation and learn study and time management…

Once these foundations are set, my job as a tutor is to refine my student's understandings of more difficult concepts and clarifying any queries they may have on content covered in school, ensuring…

A vital thing a tutor can do is create an environment where the student feels safe to fail. In a school setting, there's often a fear of looking "slow" in front of peers. I believe a tutor's job is to remove that pressure, encouraging the student to ask the "dumb" questions. Once that anxiety is gone, their brain actually becomes much more open to…

The most important things a tutor can do is help students understand that being wrong or not being as fast or as good at studying is not a bad thing. Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

Inside MilperraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Liam focused on advanced essay writing by refining his Merchant of Venice presentation and practising deeper analysis for The Penelopiad, as well as preparing for short answer modules through targeted practice questions.

Year 11 student Petrea worked on structuring media articles and typing up detailed chapter summaries for her English text, with guidance on layout and examples to improve clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ryan tackled fractions by finding lowest common denominators and practiced reading comprehension skills, reviewing assignment drafts for both maths and English.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, one student hesitated to expand on evidence in essays, often stopping at technique identification rather than fully explaining how it created meaning. As a tutor noted, "he struggles with linking these together through succinct sentences," leading to missed marks despite strong content knowledge.

Another Year 9 student recounted story events instead of analysing them, relying on summary over deeper insight—this made essays less persuasive and more descriptive.

In Year 5 reading tasks, unfamiliar vocabulary caused pauses and self-correction; during spelling practice, mispronunciations persisted until extra syllable work was added. The result: uncertainty crept in when writing or answering under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Milperra noticed that a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly seeks clarification whenever he's unsure, especially during essay planning—showing much more initiative than before.

Another high schooler recently improved from struggling with unseen English exam questions to quickly identifying key techniques and confidently suggesting alternatives when given feedback, even earning a big jump to 15/20 on his latest assessment.

Meanwhile, a younger student who found decimals tricky at first is now not only solving those problems independently but also reading aloud with noticeably smoother pronunciation during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount St Joseph Milperra.
