The most valuable aspect I provide to many students is confidence boosting, helping them learn to trust themselves and their instincts in what they've learned. I excel at providing a personalised experience, helping the student to gain genuine understanding instead of just being able to regurgitate…

Firstly, I believe developing a strong relationship with a student is one of the most important things a student can do. This shows trust and allows students to give their full potential during sessions. Another important part of tutoring is to have a clear and well designed plan for the session ahead, which makes both the student and tutor have a…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. Rather than lecturing, I guide. I help students connect…

Build confidence and identify root causes. Many students struggle because of foundational gaps or misconceptions, not lack of ability. Once I pinpoint where understanding breaks down, I can deliver targeted help that actually sticks. The other half is fostering independence, my job is to teach students how to think through problems, not create…

A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

Its a very open question in my point of view but, if I want to say it as brief as I can its backing them up making them reach a certain level and then teaching them how to fish instead of just giving them fish and when they learn how to fish giving them tips for catching bigger fish. I believe a tutor should know phycology so he/she knows how to…

teach understanding of a topic rather than how to do a problem so the student can tackle more difficult problems on there own without help. With understanding you can answer any question. Make tutors unnecessary. The worst outcome is a student who can only solve problems when their tutor is in the room. Everything I do builds the student's own reasoning process, teaching them how to break down unfamiliar problems, check their own work, and trace errors back independently. In science that means understanding logic behind a formula,…

Teaching math or English?! students can get that information from books, the internet, online courses and so many other ways. Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make the student feel truly listened to. When a student feels heard and understood, they gain confidence. I also believe it's about helping them fall in love with the subject not just memorise it. If they can connect with the topic and see its value or beauty in some way, learning becomes…

Inside MitchamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sav explored the key themes and ideas in George Orwell's 1984 and practised structuring analytical essay introductions and body paragraphs.

Year 11 student Manya focused on using sentence starters to build effective analytical paragraphs, as well as analysing symbols within her set text beyond surface meaning.

In VCE Biology, Year 12 student Zoe reviewed core bioethical principles before tackling dihybrid cross questions with worked examples drawn from past exam papers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled with timed essay writing—she finds it difficult to finish introductions quickly, which meant her full responses were often incomplete during practice.

In VCE Biology, the same student's errors on bioethics MCQs stemmed from insufficient revision and confusion between key definitions, especially when "extra information in questions" was present.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student repeatedly omitted full sentences and overlooked grammatical details in reading tasks; she also mixed up number placement in long division and left times-tables unmastered past 6×9.

During English lessons, messy paragraph structure made it hard for teachers to follow her argument progression.

Recent Achievements

One Mitcham tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who, after previously skipping questions under time pressure, now works through them methodically—recently answering previously missed exam questions correctly when given more support with timing strategies.

Another high schooler, Sav, moved from struggling to identify what made an essay strong to confidently breaking down sample introductions and structuring her own without much prompting.

For a younger student, Tia initially found combinations and reading comprehension challenging but now shows real independence by tackling tricky maths scenarios step-by-step and consistently finding key answers directly from the text.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nunawading Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
