The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. In addition to inculcating academic knowledge in students, a tutor can help students become more passionate towards a subject and can enable the student to grow as a holistic individual by providing moral support and mentorship for the student and helping the student grow in his/her values. I believe that I am extremely patient and do not mind…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. Only then can the student understand the concept in depth and apply their learning to a new question. As I was once a private tutee, I understand how the tutor should explain concepts in a clear and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to provide a pillar of support both emotionally and academically so that students are able to rely on the tutor and not feel lost and dejected. Having the attitude to learn, patience and being a friend to accompany these students on their learning journey. As i am a student myself, i can relate to the…

Making the student believe that Knowledge is Power. Understand and identify where exactly the student is struggling or facing difficulties. Also making sure that the student is in the right headspace at the time of studying is equally important. Firstly, I try and understand the current progress of the student. I believe in making the person…

I consider student engagement in a topic is one of the most important things a tutor can encourage in a student, and as someone beginning a Masters in physics I have plenty of enthusiasm myself for learning maths and science. I think that my enthusiasm will encourage students to to develop an enthusiasm of their own for what they are learning, as…

Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Comprehensive understanding of the subject. I am…

Because only then i can understand how shall my approach be.…

Sophie, Mount Hawthorn

Inside Mount HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily focused on converting mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as identifying and simplifying similar fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Sarah tackled solving more complex linear equations and practiced creating flow charts to clearly show her working out.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Joshua worked through probability questions, including the use of Venn diagrams to represent outcomes and calculate combined probabilities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, a reluctance to show working when tackling complex multiplication or linear equations led to hidden errors—one tutor observed, "she needed reminders to set out each step for clarity."

Meanwhile, in Year 10 English, an assignment draft was marked by run-on sentences and confusion with key terms; without concise planning, ideas became too broad for timed tasks.

For a Year 5 student revising times tables, focusing only on familiar patterns meant less progress with the 8s and 9s.

In these moments, confidence dipped as tasks grew more challenging or feedback was missed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Hawthorn tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously struggled to include key elements in essay responses now consistently highlights all keywords from prompts and ensures every aspect is addressed—this shift has made her written plans much more thorough.

In Year 8, a student who used to hesitate asking for help with fiction analysis now speaks up whenever she's unsure, leading to real improvements in her understanding of plot and character.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who found linear equations confusing last term can now confidently solve them using flow charts without any guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Vincent Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Hawthorn Primary School.
