First and foremost, a tutor has to gel up with the student, make him/her comfortable. Once that is done, the teaching method adopted must be interesting, with must include examples from daily life so that the student can relate to it easily. Moreover, a diagrammatic approach must be used while teaching, since, children tend to remember pictures…

I think a tutor can help a student to boost confidence in a situation where a little more dedicated time and effort could make possible. A tutor can develop a learning strategy that the student can follow, to make a difficult or boring subject easier and interesting to learn. Karen, North Lake

Inside North LakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Daniel practised converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, alongside spelling review using GATE sample test material.

For Year 9, Tom focused on algebraic factorisation (taking out common factors) and index laws, working through targeted textbook questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harry revised simultaneous equations with practice problems from his class text and Ezymath resources, ensuring step-by-step accuracy in his solutions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student was unaware of the test on Tuesday and therefore had not prepared for it, highlighting ongoing organization issues—missing assessment dates meant last-minute revision and incomplete cheat sheets.

Another in Year 9 English hesitated to plan ahead, often jumping into narratives without mapping out resolutions or main ideas, leading to rushed endings.

A Year 8 student relied heavily on mental calculations, skipping written working for algebra problems; as noted, "showing workings rather than just an answer which he had done in his head" was still inconsistent, making errors harder to spot during review.

Recent Achievements

One North Lake tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously making frequent careless errors in trig questions, is now double-checking his work and catching mistakes before they cost him marks.

A Year 9 session saw a quieter student begin to talk through her thought process out loud while tackling tough algebra problems—something she used to avoid by guessing silently.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with reading comprehension surprised the tutor by summarising the main idea of a new text without prompting and identifying key points independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bull Creek Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blue Gum Montessori School.
