I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students gain confidence and develop a genuine understanding of the subject rather than just memorizing answers. A good tutor should be patient, encouraging, and able to adapt to each student’s needs and pace of learning. Building trust, motivating students, and making learning less…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

In my opinion, it is important for a tutor to understand the student's needs. We must take the time to assess the student's current knowledge, strengths, weaknesses, and learning style, and ultimately finding optimal teaching methods for them. Besides, in order to motivate students, it is crucial to keep students engaged by showing enthusiasm for…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge because a lot of students struggle not because they are incapable, but because they are convinced themselves they can’t do it. Beyond that, I think it’s important to teach a student how to think through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. The goal is to make them capable enough…

Finding a love for the subject that they are learning, making them eager to learn rather than feeling forced. According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand his/her situation and academic difficulties. It's important to relate to the student and their problem in order to be able to solve it. Another very important thing is trust. There has to be mutual trust for a knowledge transfer to happen. I believe that every…

A tutor must be able to communicate effectively and teach strategically, adjusting their methods to the student. A teacher must also be willing to accept their mistakes; a teacher can become the student and vice versa A tutor must be calm and patient, allowing for quick-thinking and solving questions on the spot, which is typically rather…

It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just teach them their lessons - but also teach them better study habits. This will ensure that the students may learn to study on their own without the help of a tutor all the time, and that they may be able to grow as an individual prepared for bigger challenges (such as uni,…

Inside North WilloughbyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sam focused on fractions and percentages, practising converting between them and solving everyday word problems.

For Year 9, Eli worked through linear relationships by finding gradients and equations of lines, then tackled parallel and perpendicular lines using their gradient properties.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Grace reviewed single and bivariate statistics—interpreting column graphs, histograms, and scatter plots—while also discussing key terms like skewness, mean, and mode.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student repeatedly omitted units in answers and left out exact forms (e.g., writing "6.28" instead of "2π"), which made it harder to spot errors quickly and slowed revision. As a tutor noted, "formatting at the start of each line needs work—especially with units."

In senior physics, another learner arrived without prior notes or completed homework, meaning time was lost recapping rather than advancing to trigonometry.

Meanwhile, a primary student tackling subtraction with borrowing often forgot earlier steps when not fully attentive; this led to confusion between ordinals and ordering numbers mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

One North Willoughby tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who'd felt overwhelmed by Advanced Mechanics; instead of shutting down, she asked to revisit trigonometry basics and stuck with the session until she could solve practice questions without prompting.

In another high school lesson, Eli—who previously hesitated to ask for help—began actively translating word problems into equations on his own and used the elimination method accurately for simultaneous equations.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by arriving with notes prepared from watching a film ahead of time, showing new initiative that hadn't been seen before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Castle Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Thomas' Catholic Primary School.
