To be supportive of their learning curves, be patient when teaching and to make learning an enjoyable experience for a student. I make my tutoring sessions informative but fun, and I can easily gauge different teaching methods that suit different students. I believe my students are very comfortable with asking me questions, and I take my time in…

As a tutor one should be patient and flexible so that the student fully benefits from your lesson. Ultimately the classes are for imparting knowledge to the students. So ensuring that the student understands the lessons and have a proper take away is extremely important. As a tutor, I would rate effective communication and ease with which I can…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to not only develop the student's understanding of the content, but also to develop their self-efficacy and facilitate their own ability to analyze and break down tough concepts independently, as I think this is a skill that will continue to serve them far into the future. I think that I'm…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is that they can truly understand the student's problem and help in a way best suited for the individual instead of a generic method. They should also assist the student and not add to their difficulty in understanding the topic. My strengths are that I am a good listener and can articulate my…

Good preparation before tutorials is essential. We also need to Know the students' ability and level of understaniding on the subjects, so that good explanations can be provided them. Besides, a little quizzes, drills and exercises may help student to be familiar to the subjects. I am patient to student. And I am eager to explain different…

Make them feel capable and competent no matter how difficult they may find the subject. Help them know and feel that the hard work will pay off and be worth the effort. Firstly, allowing them to be engaged and enjoy the content they learn. Providing an environment that the student be comfortable in. Apart from educating them, it is also important to be a role model for growing students. Being able to communicate clearly with either student, co-worker or manager. A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

Building rapport and a positive classroom environment. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

Inside NunawadingTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Zoe worked on advanced index laws and tackled worded questions involving indices, as well as practising complex linear equations with rearranging and problem solving.

Year 8 Abeeha focused on mastering perimeters and areas of composite shapes, learning new area formulas for rectangles and triangles, plus converting between square and cubic units.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jacob strengthened his addition and subtraction skills using a variety of hands-on activities like mathematical mazes and matching games to boost confidence with double-digit numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student frequently skipped writing out working for worded problems, making it harder to catch counting errors and visualize solutions; as noted, "needs to work on writing out the working out more."

In Year 10 science, difficulty recalling terms like "aorta" stemmed from not keeping organized vocabulary lists, which led to hesitancy during labelling tasks.

A senior student tackling exam-style extended-response questions in maths relied heavily on referring back to notes instead of attempting recall first—this slowed progress and limited retention.

These habits left students retracing steps or second-guessing answers instead of building confidence through independent practice.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Zoe moved from hesitating with linear equations to completing every fluency question on her revision sheet ahead of a test, showing far more independence than before.

Meanwhile, Kaylee (Year 10) demonstrated a new ability to use her calculator strategically during algebraic problems and integrated various tones into argumentative writing—something she hadn't attempted previously.

On the primary side, Jacob now works out multi-digit addition by carefully lining up his numbers on paper instead of guessing, and he completed all regrouping addition questions correctly this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nunawading Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nunawading Christian College - Primary.
