I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence as well as academic understanding. A good tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, identify areas where they need extra help, and explain concepts in a way that matches their learning style. It's also…

Treat students with respect and teach them how to treat others with respect. During my years as a student, I found it difficult to learn stuff very…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

I believe the most important things are to build confidence and foster independence. A tutor's job isn't just to help a student get a better grade on the next test; it's to give them the skills and self-belief to tackle future challenges on their own. This means creating a safe, supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking "silly"…

I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. My main priority as a tutor has always been to develop a love, or at least form of passion, from the student regarding whatever I teach. I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. Inside OrmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia worked on solving simultaneous linear equations and finding gradients from y = mx + c, using graph sketches to visualise relationships.

Year 10 student Jacob revised completing the square and factorisation by grouping, then practised graphing parabolas using both techniques.

For Year 11, Sophie tackled index and exponential equations alongside revision of logarithm laws, focusing on simplifying complex expressions step-by-step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's working was hard to follow: he often left out brackets and negatives, making it difficult to check for sign errors in factorising quadratics.

For a Year 11 probability task, another needed extra reminders to bring the right notes and practice sheets—forgetting materials slowed revision on conditional events.

A Year 10 student tackling simultaneous equations sometimes hesitated to show steps, especially with negatives; this meant time was lost fixing hidden calculation slips rather than moving ahead.

In senior calculus, over-reliance on notes for derivatives delayed progress when formulas weren't immediately at hand.

Recent Achievements

One Ormond tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze when asked to solve simultaneous equations now working through them out loud, checking each step rather than staying silent and stuck.

In a recent high school session, a Year 12 student who had been avoiding surds altogether managed to simplify several on her own and even asked for extra examples.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once rushed and guessed at multiplication facts slowed down during practice, carefully double-checking answers before moving on. At the end of his lesson, he finished all ten problems without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College - Ormond Campus. Alternatively lessons can be had at Ezy Math Tutoring Ormond, 5/596 North Rd, Ormond, 3204, VIC, 03 7073 7122
