I believe a tutor's job, especially for secondary level Mathematics and Chemistry, is to first and foremost, build a solid foundation of knowledge. Once these foundations are set, my job as a tutor is to refine my student's understandings of more difficult concepts and clarifying any queries they may have on content covered in school, ensuring…

I believe that a tutor cannot elevate a student's competency into a whole new level but they themselves do. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them recognise their potential and become more passionate about studying through personalised lessons, through which they can become engaged and self-develop their…

As stated above it is important for a tutor to be patient and understanding of others. This would allow for a tutor to be adaptive in their teaching, altering the method of teaching content in order to assist a student's understanding. It is also important for a tutor to provide a comfortable learning environment and supply consistent effort to…

Good communication. Being able to properly connect with the student is important in building trust so that the student is open and honest about their ability and will ask questions when they don't understand new or existing concepts. Motivation is important for a student in their learning as it allows students to achieve their personal best and good results in their subjects as well as increase their productivity in class and possibly their enjoyment in their subjects. The most important things a tutor can do is help students understand that being wrong or not being as fast or as good at studying is not a bad thing. A tutor must go at the students pace, not rush them and be patient as possible. Of course it is important to teach the students what they need but also help them grow and feel comfortable. I am very…

Listen, for a student to learn they ask questions and it’s important for a tutor to be able to listen and respond. I think my strengths are in my patience and empathy. Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I would say my strengths are attributes such as patience with the student (repetition when necessary), determination in getting the message across, and a friendly attitude towards all…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to enrich their understanding and reinvigorate or catalyze a passion in a particular subject. Nowadays, a student's passion for a particular subject dwindles as they go further and further into their high school career. This may be due to external factors such as pressure or…

Students often break down because they feel everything that is happening to them is unique to them. In reality this is not true, thus as a tutor I believe the most important thing is to be supportive to the student, but also being able to provide responses which are tailored to the understanding/way of learning of the student. My understanding of…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

I believe that all providers of education should not only prepare a student for an exam, but to open the student's eyes to the wider world, where they can explore their passions. In this way, I consider confidence an important aspect that a tutor can provide to a student. School can sometimes feel so impossible, when sitting in a large classroom…

Inside PananiaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages, as well as understanding probability by assigning chances on a number line.

For Year 9, Sarah practised solving quadratic equations both by factorising and using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on financial maths topics including calculating income, overtime, and commission with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 mathematics, one student's algebra working was "messy and hard to follow," making it difficult to trace errors—especially when multiplying with negatives.

During a Year 11 timed English task, another student struggled to interpret questions and showed little experience with exam pacing, resulting in incomplete responses.

In a Year 5 session, the urge for perfection led to over-erasing and hiding mistakes instead of correcting them openly; this slowed progress during division drills.

When confidence dipped in Year 4 maths, motivation lagged: "He hesitated on timestables, often pausing mid-question," leaving newer concepts unpracticed as anxiety set in.

Recent Achievements

One Panania tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously mixed up formulas is now reliably using the correct method to calculate gross and net income, even in tricky worded questions.

In Year 8 maths, a student who used to rush through factorising binomials is taking time to check each step—last session, he caught and fixed his own mistake without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a Year 4 student who hesitated with times tables now jumps confidently between 3s and 8s by using "jumping points" for recall; she finished her set of multiplication problems with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Panania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Christopher's Catholic Primary School.
