One of the most important things is to ensure that a tutor is able to make the student comfortable during the lesson. Working in a suitable environment allows the student to perform at a higher performance. This includes bonding with the student and encouraging them whenever possible, providing positive reinforcement. Another important thing is…

Believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is connect with the student and understand how the student learns and tailor their tutoring according to that style. I also believe it's very important for tutors to be patient and considerate when students are learning. I believe that I can teach in a fun, enjoyable and visual manner…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. I also think compassion and understanding are necessary traits for tutors. Every student learns at different paces, and can grasp certain topics quicker than others. Patience…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

The most important thing is to give the students better clarity than when they first joined the session. Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. As a tutor's job is to be supplementary to a students learning, the most vital role a tutor can fulfill is to be sympathetic and understanding to a student's situation, and to be adaptive in the way they assist the student in order to maximise their potential. Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
