For me, the most important thing to do as a tutor is not only help teach class content, but share study skills, time management, note taking tips, and other ways to manage the Year 12 workload. Year 12 is not purely about knowledge, but handling pressure and staying on top of work, and I hope to communicate my experience in this. Throughout my…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. I am able to understand the thought process of a student and their weak points. This allows me to help construct their concepts from the base up and ensure they can solve any…

I believe effective tutoring comes from understanding a student’s perspective when learning. A tutor who can do this can make lessons more engaging, identify learning barriers, and help students build genuine confidence and enjoyment in learning. Achieving this requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to understand each student’s…

The most important thing is to provide clarity and build a student’s independence. A tutor should identify where a student is struggling and give them the specific tool, whether it's a math formula or a study technique, to solve problems on their own. It’s about being a reliable resource they can trust. My strengths are my versatility and my…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

The most important things a tutor can do are:- * Provide enough explanation until the student is able to develop his/her own approach to a question and logically solve it step by step, while understanding the reason behind each step. *A tutor should also be willing to solve any kind of doubt and do that as soon as possible, since dealing…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their personal goals. As a one on one tutor, this means understanding the students personal strengths and weaknesses, and tailoring the lessons to assist them where they need it. To me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be firm but patient, and to allow them to solve problems/formulate ideas themselves, not just be fed information to rote-learn. I believe this style of educating enables students to develop their own confidence as they actually understand what they’re doing, not just taking a…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a safe and encouraging environment where a student feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence over time. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grasp/love a subject. A tutor needs to be able to correctly relay information to the student and teach in an understandable way. It is crucial that you teach your student in the way they learn and do whatever needs to be done to help them. As well as this, you need to be able to set goals to work towards with your student so that the time spent with them is worthwhile.…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
