The most important thing a tutor can do is stimulate their thought process and encourage collaboration. This involves questioning them, asking the students to work together to solve a particular problem This involves getting the students to think and make them capable to address their own problems. Tutors must realise that different students think…

The most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is to make him understand the concept instead of just showing him how to solve the problems. If a student understands the concept well then he can solve any type of problem. As I tutor , my strengths are understanding the level of teaching required for any particular student. Each student…

Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. Also, being understanding when the student struggles to perform when facing more…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study the problem…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the student leaves without any questions. After each session, the student should understand everything that has been taught or revised during a lesson, and be able to apply their new knowledge to higher order questions which will enable them to succeed in their…

Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. Be patient in explaining the same concepts a number of times. Do their jobs honestly and make sure that the student understands the core fundamentals and not just the shortcuts. Impart discipline. I believe that I am a very calm individual. It doesn't matter if a person asks me the same questions over and over again. I would still respond with the…

Ensuring that they genuinely understand concepts through providing challenging questions or examples rather than simply asking whether they feel confident with a topic, as this was a trap I fell in and I would always answer yes to, to not seem 'dumb'. Having struggled to grasp concepts during school, I am aware of the patience and resilience…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. The most important things the tutor should do for a student are understanding where the student needs more help, which is the advantage a private tutoring can provide, being patient with the student's understanding, bringing the enthusiasm to the class so the student can be more energised, be well prepared for all the content thoroughly before the…

Inside PrairiewoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily worked on equations involving algebraic expressions and fractions, as well as mean, median, mode and interpreting dot plots in data.

Year 8 student Emily focused on the distance formula and midpoint formula, then moved to gradient calculations using both formulas and graphs.

Year 9 student Emily tackled financial mathematics by calculating weekly wages and overtime pay, followed by understanding income tax and net versus gross pay.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived late and unprepared for lessons, which meant valuable time was spent recapping missed content rather than moving forward.

"She sometimes isn't paying attention to the lesson," a tutor observed during algebra revision, resulting in gaps that made new material harder to grasp.

In Year 11 Legal Studies, forgetting to bring notes or not revising earlier topics led to confusion when trying to link recent cases with legal principles.

Missed homework in Year 10 Maths left methods half-remembered, so key steps were forgotten on tests—especially when under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Prairiewood tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had been hesitant to ask for help now regularly speaks up when confused, making it easier for her to grasp trickier maths topics like equations involving fractions.

In another high school session, a student initially struggled with law reform concepts but by the end could explain key cases in detail, even bringing in her own researched examples.

Meanwhile, a primary student who previously mixed up times tables is now reciting them smoothly each week and completed all ten multiplication problems without errors during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wetherill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mary MacKillop Catholic College.
