I think some of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is obviously, being able to lift their grades as well as instilling more self-confidence in them when tackling harder questions. Another more important thing is being able to act as a mentor to the student, and relay any important information that would be beneficial to…

I have realized that children need tutors who can hone a child's curiosity into skill and their academic strengths. Not only that, but I also support the idea of fun learning! I believe that it is important for a student to enjoy what they are studying as their happiness is important. Through this, they understand and remember better! I believe I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his/her student is to provide them assistance on topics outside their course as it not only reduces their stress level thus making it easier for students to focus but also at the same time students can relate to the teacher and thus aiding in their understanding. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is definitely taking initiative in everything they do. An outstanding tutor should be able take charge and seize the initiative; being a role model, for example, if a student has an exam coming up, a tutor should take the initiative to provide extra sessions; being able to put their best foot…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

A tutor is there both to teach content and to improve a student's study habits. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. Make sure the student has the right attitude towards studying and enjoying as well. I personally think enjoying what you are doing is the most important. From my experience, It is way easier to learn and memorize the things you like. Forcing the student to do something worsens the attitude and possibly the grade as well. I think my biggest…

I feel I am able to explain concepts clearly and adapt…

I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

A tutor can show students how challenging questions are done and prepare them well for their exams/tests. Plus, encourage them to put in their full potential to score well in exams. As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to always encourage them that they have the ability to achieve more than they think. Inside PymbleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jasmine worked through graphing linear relationships and finding equations from graphs, alongside a review of geometry problems involving similar triangles.

Year 9 student Erin focused on interpreting data sets using measures of spread and central tendency, as well as practising calculator skills for statistical analysis.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sam revised index laws and algebraic factorisation, including expanding brackets and simplifying terms with indices using step-by-step examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when tackling factorisation, often skipped writing full working out—this led to confusion mid-problem and errors that had to be retraced. As one tutor noted, "limited working out presented may lose marks if not fixed."

In Year 10 trigonometry, a student hesitated to write steps down, preferring mental calculation but missing connections between formulae.

For a Year 11 English analysis task, another struggled to make arguments concise because points were not clearly mapped out in notes.

After a busy sport session, a Year 7 student became distracted during algebra exercises and missed key instructions for setting up equations.

Recent Achievements

A Pymble tutor noticed a real shift with one Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to take initiative in English; now, she's reading set texts ahead of schedule and coming prepared with her own analysis.

In Year 9 maths, another student has started spotting her own errors when double-checking work—something she rarely attempted before—which helped her accurately calculate quartiles independently on box and whisker plots last session.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student surprised his tutor by inventing new ways to split shapes for perimeter questions after struggling with visualising geometry last term. Inventing new strategies for shapes marked a significant leap in confidence and skill.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ku-ring-gai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
