To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

Building confidence, Simplifying the complex and connecting on a personal level. If a tutor is able to achieve these three, they will find a successful outcome. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor guides their student to understand the "why" behind concepts, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is essential in ensuring that the student is able to independently…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

Personally, being adaptable and flexible in your teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. As individuals, we all learn at a different pace through a variety of mediums. Hence, it is important to easily recognise this and cater your teaching for each student. This creates a personalised and catered experience which is…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. Great service, fantastic tutors, always punctual and pleasant.

Inside Queens ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam focused on fraction arithmetic and reading comprehension, using short texts to practice extracting key information.

For Year 8, Chloe worked through linear equations involving substitution as well as area and volume calculations for basic geometric shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Noah revised quadratic equations—covering both factorisation methods and decomposing linear terms—to build confidence with more complex algebraic manipulation.

Recent Challenges

In recent Year 9–11 maths sessions, Aaron's working was frequently disorganised and incomplete, with steps missing or muddled—"working needs work, messy and without proper order nor structure."

During algebra tasks, he often copied algorithms without understanding the logic behind each step, which led to persistent calculation errors and confusion when context changed.

In senior-level geometry and trigonometry, over-reliance on memory instead of methodical reasoning caused mistakes; for example, Aaron sometimes guessed at answers or "forgot everything ratio" if a question mixed topics.

When tired or frustrated, he would abandon questions prematurely rather than attempt a systematic approach.

Recent Achievements

One Queens Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach to tricky algebra: after weeks of rushing through calculations and making errors, he's now writing out each step and catching mistakes himself—something he avoided before.

In Year 11, another student who used to quietly guess at answers in probability lessons has started asking clarifying questions whenever she gets stuck, which is new for her and shows real initiative.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once hesitated during reading time now volunteers to read aloud and explains how she draws conclusions from the text.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moriah College.
