The most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and curiosity. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, be patient, adapt to the student’s learning style, and encourage questions. Most importantly, a tutor should help the student learn how to think and solve problems independently, not just give…

Teaching them how to study is the key. Helping them to get better grades is definitely important, but teaching them the method to study is more important. Since I have just completed the accelerated Maths Method with a score of 99, I am still very fresh and familiar with the contents. I am also bilingual; I am fluent in both English and Mandarin.…

In general, I aim to build confidence and self-belief in a student in order to be independently successful. I find that most students are capable of understanding and learning difficult topics but a limited belief in their abilities prevents them from performing to their best ability. A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. The most important thing that anyone can do for their student is to have them realise that everyone started where they are starting, nobody was born knowing anything, and just because you don't understand a concept now, doesn't mean you won't ever understand it. To promote effective learning and bolster a student's academic progress, a tutor should consider the following actions: 1. Demonstrate enough patience and kindness, offering positive reinforcement and celebrating their accomplishments. 3. Ensure…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to understand their needs and feelings towards their studies. It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Inside RandwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ben practised **elapsed time questions** and worked on identifying and drawing 2D and 3D shapes.

Year 7 student William focused on solving **algebraic equations**, including collecting like terms, as well as applying **Pythagoras' theorem** to problem-solving tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student revised surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders, alongside tackling **advanced factorisation using the difference of two squares formula**.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to apply structured working in algebra, preferring mental calculation—he was hesitant to do so—which made it harder to spot method errors during factorisation tasks.

In Year 10 biology, another student avoided asking questions when unsure about cell organelles, making it tough to address misunderstandings on the spot.

A younger learner (Year 4) sometimes left homework incomplete, especially with worded problems that introduced new formats.

One secondary student became distracted mid-lesson (she can get easily distracted, taking her away from the work), which slowed progress through problem-solving practice and left some review tasks unfinished by session's end.

Recent Achievements

One Randwick tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when facing tricky probability questions now bringing his own challenging examples to sessions and breaking them down into clear steps without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously unsure about multi-step algebra problems, surprised himself by flying through practice sets and even correcting his own errors with negative numbers before the tutor stepped in.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who often rushed through work has started pausing to plan out answers, showing real care with working out—he finished last lesson by neatly solving every multiplication question and checking his methods independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marcellin College.
