Tutors must be able to carefully explain topics to a student, as well as understand the learning process of that student and help to improve it. This can be done by first understanding how a student attempts to learn concepts, and then helping the student improve any mistakes for the future. The overall goal should be to push students to think…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be available for them whenever needed to solve their doubts. Furthermore, it is essential that the tutor and the student have a good rapport so that the student can freely interact with the tutor without having any sort of fear or shyness which would hamper the learning process.…

A good tutor should be able to let the students make mistakes. A good tutor should be able to create an environment that lets students feel comfortable and open to learn new ideas. Most importantly, a good tutor should be able to get students excited and motivated to learn. I am patient and I am very understanding of the struggles of a student in…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. I do this through encouragement catered both individually and to the group (if there is one). I have found that when students believe they have the ability to complete the question, they are more likely to ask questions and understand the…

By providing this connection ultimately the student can gain the best…

I believe that the most important thing in education, whether that be in a tutorial or a formal lesson, is to ensure that it is student-centred. Every student brings different skills, interests and prior knowledge to their education, and their learning is most effective when it engages their individuality. I think that a tutor would have more…

It is such a big responsibility for a tutor to understand their students’ needs not only in term of studies. Sometimes, I believe they need extra support from the tutor to make them feel motivated for any situations. In order to make them feel interested to study, it is important to make them believe in their potential in their studies. I can…

Aside from the obvious answer of teaching the student the content he/she is having trouble with, I think there are things the tutor can do that can continue to benefit the student long after lessons have ended. Things like good study habits, problem solving skills and good communication are virtues that can be picked up from a tutor and can be…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is foster independent thinking and a growth mindset. Inside RandwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ben practised **elapsed time questions** and worked on identifying and drawing 2D and 3D shapes.

Year 7 student William focused on solving **algebraic equations**, including collecting like terms, as well as applying **Pythagoras' theorem** to problem-solving tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student revised surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders, alongside tackling **advanced factorisation using the difference of two squares formula**.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to apply structured working in algebra, preferring mental calculation—he was hesitant to do so—which made it harder to spot method errors during factorisation tasks.

In Year 10 biology, another student avoided asking questions when unsure about cell organelles, making it tough to address misunderstandings on the spot.

A younger learner (Year 4) sometimes left homework incomplete, especially with worded problems that introduced new formats.

One secondary student became distracted mid-lesson (she can get easily distracted, taking her away from the work), which slowed progress through problem-solving practice and left some review tasks unfinished by session's end.

Recent Achievements

One Randwick tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when facing tricky probability questions now bringing his own challenging examples to sessions and breaking them down into clear steps without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously unsure about multi-step algebra problems, surprised himself by flying through practice sets and even correcting his own errors with negative numbers before the tutor stepped in.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who often rushed through work has started pausing to plan out answers, showing real care with working out—he finished last lesson by neatly solving every multiplication question and checking his methods independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marcellin College.
