The single most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Everyone learns things at different rates and some things may come more easily than others. If the tutor becomes frustrated it only ends up discouraging and demoralising the student which further affects their study and confidence. Hence, it is vital for a…

Most students want to get through the next exam, but I also consider it important that knowledge and skills are reinforced and retained for years, if not for life. Because I've studied chemistry, I have a broad grasp of sciences from biology to physics and maths, and can help students link related concepts in a reinforcing manner. I've also worked…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to listen to them carefully and attentively showing all engagement towards the student. This allows the tutor to understand what is difficult and what is easier for the student and at the same time displays to the student that the tutor cares and wants to better the student's life.…

A tutor should treat every students equally. Motivate slow learners and help them improve their learning. Patience is very important and never get angry repeating the same response for those who have trouble grasping the concept. Ready to lend ears to their queries. Make learning easier so that they can enjoy learning. I have always noticed myself…

A tutor can provide personalised teaching to students that would not be available in a big classroom environment. A tutor also provides a safe space for students free of judgement where they can ask questions they might not get the chance to ask in class. Tutors also relate to the students and instill a level of confidence that truly improves…

Understand their mind , the problems they are facing and try to sort them in the simplest way possible :) The other important thing is to have a friendly bond with student, so that they can ask questions without hesitation. Understanding a student's need as each student is different , so I opt for different tutoring techniques suitable for a…

Listen, I feel that I need to hear what they struggle with and why they think they are unable to do as well as they would like. From their we can use their strengths to help improve their weaker parts of their school work. I understand where the students are coming from. I was not a top 1% student in high school. I have been able to find a way to…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to make the student take an active role in their learning. Rather than simply dictate the steps to take, a tutor needs to ensure the student participates in each aspect of their learning, whether it be through examples or solving problems. A tutor also needs to be well informed on the…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to not spoon feed information, its the art of teaching the child to a degree where it helps them but doesnt answer the entire thing. Spoon feeding a student will only help temporarily and is very harmful. I believe my strengths are that i dont like to teach every child the same…

Jaxon adores Thomas and thrives on his postive teaching skills to him. Please pass on a huge Shoutout to him.

Inside Redbank PlainsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Chido focused on converting millilitres to litres and grams to kilograms, as well as solving area and perimeter questions for squares.

Year 11 student Olivia worked through 24-hour time problems using a worksheet, then practised adding and subtracting hours and minutes from set times.

For Year 12, revision with Jasmine included applying trigonometric equations—such as interpreting amplitude and frequency changes—and reviewing logarithms, covering rules for converting between exponentials and logarithmic forms.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student hesitated to use written working for subtraction, preferring mental calculation even when struggling with regrouping. As noted, "he was just guessing numbers after a few times," rather than using materials provided—this made it hard to spot where place value errors crept in.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student repeatedly mixed up exponential and log rules, but didn't seek clarification from the teacher about missing procedures, leaving gaps unaddressed.

For Year 12 Chemistry, another found it difficult to keep track of referencing requirements in reports, resulting in incomplete bibliographies and some lost marks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Redbank Plains noticed a big shift with one Year 11 student who now confidently tackles tough calculus review questions, extracting information from complex problems after previously hesitating to even attempt them.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student showed real growth by asking for help on pattern worksheets instead of staying silent—last term she'd often give up when stuck, but now works through challenges more openly.

In primary years, Joseph moved from needing step-by-step support to solving three- and four-digit addition using the house method entirely on his own, finishing all number pattern tasks without any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Redbank Plains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Redbank Plains State High School.
