Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

I believe having patience and commitment to the student’s education are important qualities for a tutor. However, I believe the ability to inspire the student and provide them with the right tools to succeed in their subjects is the most important things a tutor can do for a student. My strengths include being able to communicate the problems…

I believe one of the most vital things that tutors can do is alter their teaching type based on different students' abilities and progression over time. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster understanding, build confidence, and encourage independent thinking. Beyond academic knowledge, it’s crucial to boost the student’s confidence by celebrating small achievements and reinforcing their belief in their own abilities. Tutors should also aim to teach…

I personally think the most important thing would be to curate a session based on their student's learning style and guiding them to succeed in whatever subject they seek help with. On top of that, a tutor must also be willing to give it their all and be passionate about what they teach in order to boost the student's confidence and make them grow…

Being there for a student when needed. I believe a student should be comfortable enough with their tutor that they are not afraid to ask any questions and thus be able to unlock their highest potential My young age often allows me to understand and get along well with younger kids. I believe this skill can be valuable in helping convey trickier…

A tutor should be able to identify the weaknesses and strengths of a student and lift their confidence first. An excellent tutor has patience to work with the student until the student's needs are achieved. Giving positive feedback when they present their work, which will then stimulate their work ethic. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their understanding, confidence, and independence. It's not just about helping them get the right answer, but making sure they understand the process behind it so they can apply it on their own in the future. A good tutor must be able to understand the needs of the student. Every students has his/her own level and it is very important for a good tutor to recognise that level. Once I recognise that level, I start with that level and along with teaching and explaining I always try to involve the students as much as possible in learning through various…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

One of the most essential ingredients is chemistry. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. I think it is very important to ask the student if they’re still attentive and understanding after every while of teaching. This is because of the student have lost concentration, they will not be able to learn anything and the lesson will be effectively useless. Thus it is important to sometimes insert some humour or times to stretch to regain…

Andrea, Ringwood East

Inside Ringwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Harry focused on multiplying and dividing using times tables grids and practiced finding percentages of numbers, including real-world scenarios like discounts.

In Year 8, Gabriella worked through factorising quadratic equations and practiced graphing quadratics in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Tom tackled solving linear equations and explored how to sketch lines and calculate gradients across different contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's algebra work was hard to follow because working steps weren't shown—"writing out the process would have made sign errors easier to spot."

In Year 10, messy layouts and unlabeled diagrams in geometry led to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 11 student skipped homework on exponents, making class review less effective and missing feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student only revised familiar multiplication facts instead of challenging areas; this slowed their progress with division tasks.

After setbacks, a senior student hesitated to ask clarifying questions, leaving gaps unaddressed before tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ringwood East noticed a Year 10 student who was previously hesitant with algebra now solving multi-step expressions much faster, finishing their times tables under five minutes for the first time.

In Year 11 English, one student began offering more creative ideas during discussions and even took the initiative to brainstorm themes for their upcoming SAC—something they'd rarely volunteered before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to need lots of guidance worked out nearly all her 8-times-table questions independently this week, only checking in for help when really needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Realm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eastwood Primary School.
