I can listen. A tutor is there to accommodate the student's needs, and no high ATAR is going to mean anything if they can't. In general, emotional intelligence is very important for tutors. I will always try to understand what it is whoever I'm helping actually needs help with, and then listen to them as we continue to work - there’s no point in…

Make them interested in what they are learning and make them understand why things work the way they do. I feel learning should not be about memorising rather understanding so that the logic can be used to solve a wide array of problems. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel good about themselves. I feel it is essential that they do this through teaching so that the student feels happy when they start to understand and do stuff they were orginally having trouble over. I am a bright and bubbly person. I will never judge people for…

Definitely building a student's confidence. It's one of the most important things you can learn throughout school, really. When students realise those 'impossible' problems aren't so impossible it opens so many doors for their future. Secondly, enthusiasm for learning. I'm a huge nerd, working in a lab, and I'm happy to chat about academic or…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in themselves. Teaching content is part of it, but guiding them to believe they can tackle challenges on their own is even more important. A tutor should make learning feel manageable by breaking things into clear, achievable pieces and giving students tools they…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help the student truly understand the material, not just memorize it. But beyond that, it's also about building their confidence. A good tutor makes the student feel like they're capable and smart, even when they're struggling. Ultimately, the goal is to help them become more independent…

To help a student really understand what they are learning and feel confident in themselves. It's not just about getting the answer right but helping them see the steps and think through the problem on their own. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable asking questions, even simple ones, and not feel judged for being confused. It also…

ESTU, Ringwood North

Inside Ringwood NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anaka worked on simultaneous equations and completed a diagnostic set of Year 9 and 10 maths questions to identify strengths.

In Year 11, Kenton reviewed the theory of depreciation missed in class and applied it through targeted practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Mohammad was tested on last year's Math, Physics, and Chemistry content before addressing specific gaps in each subject with focused revision.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, he over-complicated some exam answers, slowing him down and often providing an incorrect answer. This tendency to expand on theory instead of targeting what the question asked led to lost marks, especially when curriculum changes altered expected response formats.

In Year 11 Chemistry, lack of confidence meant Sakura could not recall material during tests—despite knowing it beforehand.

Meanwhile, in Year 5 writing tasks, Melodie struggled to expand on her initial ideas after planning; as a tutor observed, "she needs to really focus on not just planning but then expanding on those ideas." This left her final pieces brief and underdeveloped.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ringwood North noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to ask questions in class, now actively seeks clarification on complex math problems and applies new study strategies like the Pomodoro method to stay organised.

In a recent high school session, another student who used to make frequent calculation errors during quantitative reasoning tasks managed to complete a full test significantly faster and with far fewer mistakes than before—demonstrating much better retention and exam technique.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner showed real independence by self-correcting her own spelling errors and expanding her writing without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Realm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit School.
