The most important thing is truly caring about the student's needs and not just delivering the content so that whatever needs to be taught is "taught". We need to take the time to understand their needs/goals and style of learning to engage with them in the best way possible throughout the lesson for them to learn. I am very patient and…

To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build a strong, trusting and supportive environment in which they can learn and ask questions without fear of judgement. When students feel supported, they take risks in their problem solving, are not afraid to make mistakes and are more likely to be honest and tell you what they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is personalise their teaching style to best suit a student. There are a few different learning styles, and finding the one that suits your student the best can allow you to teach effectively, improve retention as well as build rapport with the student. I feel like I would be a fantastic tutor because I try…

These traits are the key to building a good relationship between tutors and students. By developing a strong relationship, students are able to build trust in…

Tutoring is more than just teaching content, it's about teaching a person. And that requires understanding, compassion and patience. I understand, that a good tutor is intelligent and knowledgeable. An exceptional tutor would ensure their students have an in-depth understanding of concepts by altering their teaching methods to best complement the student's learning capacity and to the material being taught. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster curiosity and build a student's confidence. Encouraging students to study a subject for a deeper purpose, rather than simply aiming for high grades, helps them develop genuine interest and motivation to learn. When students become curious, they are more likely to explore ideas…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. This helps build…

Make them a good person. Academics is important, but they also need to realize the purpose of education other than capitalistic schemes. Another thing is how a student can start to excel their academia without even realizing it. Good communication skills. Friendly environment. Therefore, it's crucial for a tutor to understand and align with each student’s unique learning objectives. Personalizing teaching methods to cater to individual needs and learning…

The most important role of a tutor is to transform a student’s mindset. Beyond teaching content, I aim to impart a genuine passion for the subject and build the self-belief that they are capable of mastering it. Inside RookwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ella worked through exam questions and homework on indices, scientific notation, and significant figures, focusing on applying rules to simplify expressions and convert between forms.

Another Year 9 student, Alex, completed a topic test on indices and scientific notation and was assigned worksheets covering algebra, area and perimeter, as well as volume and surface area for extra practice over the break.

For Year 4, Mia reviewed probability using Venn diagrams along with geometry concepts, while also revising addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through targeted worksheets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra and angles often avoided showing full working, especially when rearranging equations—she jumped straight to the answer, which hid calculation slips with negatives.

In Year 10 financial mathematics, one student leaned heavily on calculator statistics mode but struggled when asked to find quartiles manually or check results without digital aids.

For a Year 4 learner practicing division, incomplete memorization of times tables meant repeated hesitations and disrupted progress in multi-step problems.

Across these sessions, skipping careful layout or relying on shortcuts led to confusion during more complex revision tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rookwood recently noticed a Year 8 student who used to avoid multiplication is now confidently reciting both the 10 and 11 times tables from memory, even volunteering to try harder questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously struggled with financial mathematics managed to solve straight-line and declining-balance depreciation problems independently after initially needing step-by-step guidance.

In another session, a Year 12 student who was hesitant about networks worked through minimum spanning tree and maximum-flow/minimum-cut theorem questions unaided, choosing the right approach for each scenario on their own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lidcombe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Homebush West Public School.
