The most important think that I consider I can do as a tutor is providing them with personalised guidance which allow them to excel in the subject and enhance their knowledge regarding the subject. Also providing them with enough resources to allow them to practise and get a better understanding of the topic allowing them to build muscle memory.…

I think a tutor can provide a new lens for the student within the subject. Doing all our learning in the same system, at the same school, helps to create routine, which can be great for lots of students, however, I think a lot of students get disheartened and, especially in developing years, need much more one on one help, being able to create an…

Be patient, I know from experience it can be hard for students to learn when you feel rushed or your questions are unimportant. Therefore, allowing students to feel as though they can take the time to ask all types of questions to support their confidence is invaluable to an educator. I am patient and judgment-free, I allow students to ask…

A good tutor should firstly ensure that the student has a solid grasp of the foundational knowledge underpinning their subject, before moving on to teach more complex concepts. This is because oftentimes a subject's more advanced concepts will draw heavily from assumed foundational knowledge. Additionally a tutor can instill confidence in a…

I believe a tutor should be able to pass on their mindset of growth and resilience to a student. A student's life would never end after just school, and being resilient and believing that you could grow above any challenges would be a huge key to their own success. While I am not a good communicator, I am a good observer. I am able to recognize…

I think the ability to listen to the needs of each student to tailor your methods to them is vital in maximising their success. In the same vein, I think it is important to provide students with learning strategies that they can approach problems with in the future, to help build their toolbox, rather than approaching each new assignment or…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

A tutor's role is to help guide a student through problems to discover the information for themselves, not to simply complete the question and move on. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is creating lesson plans and methods based around that student. The tutor should also never make a student feel dumb or less capable, but instead should show the students that they have the same capabilities as their peers, it may just take other methods, and concepts that they are not getting…

Inside Rosslyn ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Alyssia explored titrations in Chemistry, focusing on molar ratios and rearranging n = m/M and C = n/V equations, then reviewed galvanic cells and balancing redox equations for exam prep.

A Year 10 student worked through expanding brackets—both single and double—as well as simple factorisation using practice problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student revised univariate statistics, including calculating mean, median, mode, range, and began learning about the interquartile range.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in algebra showed a tendency to rely on set formulas and previously answered questions, as noted: "he preferred looking back at his working out rather than attempting new approaches first." This pattern limited flexible problem-solving, especially when faced with unfamiliar tasks.

In Year 11 chemistry, another student hesitated to tackle written discussion sections of assignments independently, preferring reassurance before trying.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner often became distracted during sessions instead of following a clear plan for revision. These habits led to slower progress when adapting to new types of exam questions or applying concepts without prompts.

Recent Achievements

One Rosslyn Park tutoring session saw a Year 12 student, Alyssia, persist through tricky titration equations—by the end, she completed complex questions independently after needing step-by-step support before.

In Year 10 maths, Alessandro has started coming to sessions with specific questions prepared and now guides the focus himself instead of waiting passively for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student, Lucy, recently picked up how to use her calculator for new types of maths problems and immediately tried it out unprompted during her English and history assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Norwood International High School.
