My aim is to not just make my students pass exams; but to go above and beyond in their learning to surpass what they thought was possible. I strive to create an atmosphere of joy and inspiration, whilst encouraging perseverance and direction for a student in their studies. Most importantly, I support my students to create a vision of who they want…

Listen to the student. I think it is of paramount importance for a tutor to listen to the problems the child is facing both academically and with the learning environment. In listening a tutor is then able to not only aid the student in what they are learning, but HOW they go about learning. I am organised and patient. I believe that as a tutor i…

Be someone they can trust and look up to. If the student sees their tutor as someone to trust and as a role model, it really helps them learn and remember important skills that are being taught. I’m able to put myself into their shoes, as I have been in their position before. It lets me engage with them…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to help their students free of charge when they're not in class, whether that be through social media or even by text. A tutor should also have patience towards a student and teach towards a students strength to optimize their learning, while also targeting a students weakness's.…

I think the most important thing is not to dump all my knowledge onto a student, but to have them have their own lightbulb moment, and figure out ways and strategies that work for best them. I am able to go at a pace that they are able to adapt to, implement different strategies easily, and I get along with a wide range of people, creating a safe…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is make him/her feel like he/she could ask any question there is. That's what makes the individual, one-on-one contact valuable in my opinion. Creating a setting where the student feels comfortable enough to do that is the most important thing. The student should feel like I'm there to help…

Show the student how to learn something. If a tutor can explain another way of looking at problems so that the student understands how to approach them, its the most useful thing for them. I think that a great tutor will eventually make themselves unnecessary. I think that I am able to adapt quickly to students learning types, as well as…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. By getting to know a student's personality and how they work generally and how they are feeling to work on the day really helps in moving the class along smoothly whilst also keeping a good rapport with the student. The tutor can prepare so that they can be ready to teach by understanding required concepts first and bringing every necessary resource to each session. I can easily tell if a student really understands a concept properly. If a student doesn't, then I know there's need to correct that by providing them with fundamental…

Tutors are different with teachers, of course. As a tutor, I can teach fewer students in a small classroom (1to1/1to 2), which means I can take care of each child, not only on their school work but also on their mental thinking ; I can answer their questions in time or straight away; I can help them to have a look of their homework questions or…

I believe that a good tutor should have credentials, good grades, of course, a Master's degree, and experience in the field. Because I've been teaching so long I've taught…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient. Every student is unique and has his/her specific needs in terms of how to deliver a specific content. Create a judgment-free environment where students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
