the most important part a tutor like me can do is encouraging students to believe in their abilities and providing positive reinforcement as they progress. Also, the gist of my 2 years of tutoring would be offering tailored teaching experience where adapting teaching methods to suit the student’s learning styles and needs and working on…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand said student, and adjust their methods accordingly. 1. Teaching engagingly and interestingly: the student should not feel like it is just another class at school, but provide an opportunity for him/her to engage and deliver content in a manner which piques his/her interest. 2. Providing clear explanations: complex content should be broken down and taught according to the student's knowledge level…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. Having spent a lot of my high school career with a variety of tutors, I have created the ideal profile of an effective tutor in my mind, and the most important thing I value in a tutor is their ability to go beyond showing how to do something and reveal the path a student must take to discover a solution for themselves. The most unforgettable…

Personally, being adaptable and flexible in your teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. As individuals, we all learn at a different pace through a variety of mediums. Hence, it is important to easily recognise this and cater your teaching for each student. This creates a personalised and catered experience which is…

I believe the most important thing is to make sure the student fully understands the knowledge, being able to use it in any situation, while enjoying the learning. It is when the student fully engages in their learning experience that the outcome can be fully maximised. I wish this upon all students, and I would love to be the mentor who guides…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

Be an attentive listener then explain the concept in the way your student will best understand it. A tutor should give the most custom type of teaching to each student as general lectures are also given in school and their is no point in repeating the same. A tutor should support the development of the student, but in the same way do so without making the student over-reliant on the tutor. In this way, the student will be able to maintain their success throughout their whole academic career. They should be patient and willing to explain things from different perspectives, especially if it seems the…

Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
