There are two most important things that students can do for a student. One is to know how to apply suitable methods to answer students' confusion and guide students in the right direction. The other thing is like what I mentioned, tutor needs to hav their openness, such as accessibility, availability, involvement, and empathy. The t should…

Tutors need to be able help their students learn how to problem solve. Too often tutors prioritise getting the correct answer or achieving a high mark. Although that is one of the main reasons students have tutors, they need to support students so they can take on new questions rather than approach them with a memorised trick without understanding…

The ability to connect with the student, understand where they struggle and help them grasp the subject making it more interesting and easier to understand. As the mother of a 12-year-old straight-A student, an IT professional who has mentored multiple teams, and a university tutor, I can relate to the dynamics of different students, their varied…

Although my goal is to see them be at the top of their class, it is more important to see improvements in their tutor lessons and use the knowledge I give them at school to refine their skills I am very easy going and I have a lot of patience. So I am good with kids that are struggling to understand. I use the 4 predominant learning styles:…

As a tutor, I need to be responsible for the student, tolerant to address all his queries, unlocking his potential, and help bring his learning skills by identifying whether he is a visual learner, auditory learner, or kinesthetic learner and shape him accordingly. I am a passionate teacher, honest and punctual. I have positive thinking with good…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is guide students toward finding their own way of studying, so they not only understand the material but also develop the skills and confidence to apply that knowledge independently as they move forward. My strengths as a tutor are communication and patience—I focus on explaining concepts clearly,…

In my opinion, it is most important that a tutor can develop students' passion towards the subject while supporting them in reaching their desired achievement. This includes recognising their strengths and other skills to be improved and adopting the appropriate approaches to accelerating their progress. As a student with a strong background in…

Listen to the student patiently. Different students have a different understanding capacity. Therefore, a tutor should be flexible to adjust to the level of the student and explain to him/her about the subject. I am an active listener and a patient one. These two go hand in hand as it is really important for me to understand the student's needs,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning approachable, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but about helping them understand the why behind what they’re learning. A good tutor should also…

I believe that fudmentally the most important thing is to help build the student's confidence and enjoyment of a subject. By adapting to their individual learning styles and pace, which in turn creates a safe, supportive environment where they feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions. I would say I’m good at breaking down complex…

I believe the most significant aspect is to provide the right track and guidance to the student in order to overcome his/her deficiency. Everyone comes up with different weaknesses but the ability to sort out the issue in an easy way to prevent future hurdles is very crucial and one that a tutor must conduct efficiently. I believe my friendly…

Make them believe in themselves is the first thing that pops into my mind. To get a student who once thought a subject was boring or complicated into something at least "okay" in which they can see their potential in if they put in the work. Make the concept easy enough for them to understand. Secondly, allowing for all types of questions to be asked. I was a shy student, worried about my answers and questions on how my teachers would judge me. But i think the best way a tutor can teach someone is by allowing the students to ask the most basic questions so they can grow and work hard…

A tutor should be able to help the student in a personalized way. Beside that, we should work with the students as a companion rather than a teacher to remove the gap and create a comfortable environment. To give them confidence and make them feel good about themselves. There is nothing more counter-productive than making a student feel disheartened and bad about themselves, since self-doubt yields anxiety and often poor performance in exams. Establishing a basis of trust is vital for the success of the student, so that they feel in a safe space to…

Inside Russell ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Remi worked through homework covering multiplication and division, plus rapid-fire practice on fractions and time/calendar questions.

For Year 6, Ava tackled perimeter and area problems alongside exercises in fractions and percentages to build confidence with multi-step maths.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max focused on understanding angles and measurement, using diagrams to visualise different types of angles and how they're calculated.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student recently dodged homework questions and showed reluctance to read set texts outside his preferred genres.

In maths, he often avoided showing working for problems, with one lesson noting, "he believed the answer to be enough by itself." This habit became a barrier in both fractions and algebra revision.

Another high school session saw him rely on spellcheck rather than attempting spelling tasks independently, leading to limited retention.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student struggled to recall times tables out of order and hesitated with mental calculations—sometimes skipping numbers or forgetting subtraction strategies—causing visible frustration during multi-digit problems.

Recent Achievements

One Russell Vale tutoring session saw a Year 9 student, Max, approach his PDHPE test revision with much more initiative—he asked specific questions when unsure, instead of quietly guessing as he would have in earlier lessons.

In Year 7 maths, Arvon became noticeably more vocal about what he wanted to learn and managed to complete all ten numeral value questions correctly when dictated aloud—a big step up from his usual hesitation with mental recall.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who initially struggled to add small numbers now uses finger counting independently and worked through large addition sums without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Russell Vale Public School.
