According to me the most important trait in a tutor is patience. It is not necessary that each child learns at the same pace. A tutor should also possess the ability to create and provide problem statements which help the student to get a grip over the topic. Along with a good speaker a tutor must be a good listener making the session more…

I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. A tutor's role extends beyond just providing answers; it's about equipping students with problem-solving skills that they can apply across different subjects and real-world situations. My engineering degree has taught me how to break…

Inside Salisbury PlainTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lorry worked on the basics of algebra, focusing on collecting like terms and finding variable values through simple equations.

Year 10 student Lucy reviewed chemistry topics such as carboxylic acids and intermolecular forces, with particular attention to how polarity affects physical properties, then practised acid-base reactions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh tackled mathematics content on discrete random variables in statistics, including first lesson notes and introductory problem sets after missing class due to illness.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's maths homework was incomplete, and as a tutor noted, "he needs to spend more time on homework" after submitting a short essay.

In Year 11 chemistry, Lucy missed key information due to illness and now faces gaps in her understanding; she was asked to contact her teacher for missing notes.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out working in algebra—"writing the working out is just as important as writing the correct answer"—which led to hidden errors.

During an online session, one senior student became distracted and struggled to focus on collecting like terms in algebra.

Recent Achievements

One Salisbury Plain tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who had previously struggled with negative integers now tackling addition and subtraction problems almost entirely on his own, missing only two homework questions.

In Year 12 Chemistry, Lucy began sessions unsure about esters and amines but finished the lesson confidently identifying areas of strength and pinpointing where she still needed support—a big shift from earlier lessons when she felt lost.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who once hesitated to ask for help started speaking up whenever stuck in maths, leading to her finishing nearly all questions (13 out of 14) independently in under an hour.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Salisbury Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Salisbury East High School.
