I consider the most essential things a tutor can do for a student to include; teaching content in an engaging and interesting way, making lessons enjoyable and motivating the student to learn, providing clear explanations and being patient with the student when teaching while remaining dedicated to achieving learning objectives. I think it's incredibly important to be patient. People learn at their own paces and for those who struggle more than others, patience can help foster an environment where they feel comfortable expressing a lack of understanding in a concept and allows them to make the most of each tutoring session. It is also important to create lesson plans that…

The first and most obvious role of a tutor is to explain concepts and teach a student. They can guide the student and show them the path. However, it is ultimately up to the student to complete their own studies. I feel that another major role of a tutor is also to act as a mentor. In current times, a tutor may interact frequently with a student…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence in a student's learning. Great confidence leads to greater success in all areas of life and facilitates more comfortability to accept further learning. My strength as a tutor is I recognize that all individuals learn differently and have different styles of retaining information. Hence, I…

I believe a tutor’s role goes beyond improving grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing confidence in their own abilities. It’s important to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, rather than simply providing answers. By…

Tutors should be helpful, clear and supportive. Students will not reach out for help if they are afraid, or if the lesson does not spark their curiosity. A tutor should assist a student's natural learning inclinations and be open to each child's individual needs. I recognise the responsibility and balance this role requires. I am adaptable to each…

I think the most important thing would be to truly listen to a student, not only to hear him/her, but to actually listen. Indeed, I believe a student will never improve if they don't want to. Thus, I think it is the tutor's duty to make the student interested in the subject, to make it fun and as easy as possible, and that goes through the…

One of the most important things for a tutor to do is to inspire their student and give them the satisfaction of completing a question / essay rather than to write it for them or do it yourself. Making sure they are the one doing the learning and thinking is the most important thing. Friendly and really supportive when it comes to slowly going…

I find that a healthy, positive and communicative friendship with the student is crucial to them progressing. It's important to be patient and ensure you can work with all personality types and children of all ages. It's also important that tutors are prepared with teaching methods and material to help the students. They should be proactive in…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student in my opinion, when I was a student getting tutored by someone is for them to be reaffirming, for example if I didn’t get something I would want the tutor to be by my side helping me through the process. Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

Change their relationship with studies. Education should never feel like a chore. It can be fun and invigorating. First and foremost, a tutor must TEACH, rather than demonstrate. The student should UNDERSTAND what was taught, rather than just know how to apply formulae, solve equations, etc. mindlessly. Understanding is the foundation on which more understanding can be built. Tricker questions in exams test understanding rather than repetition. For the best…

Inside SeaforthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lilly focused on improving her recall and speed with times tables, especially the 4s and 12s, using interactive games and practical strategies.

In Year 9, Amelie worked through simplifying, multiplying, dividing, and rationalising surds, as well as applying volume formulas to compound shapes—sometimes drawing diagrams to visualise problems.

Meanwhile, Jerry in Year 8 tackled linear relationships by practising how to find the equation of a straight line from a table of values and reviewing homework on converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, one student consistently lost marks in exams by not showing full working for algebra and geometry questions—"he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out," a tutor noted.

In another instance, a senior Physics student's written layout was flagged: "We will continue to practice good setting out so it becomes a habit."

For HSC-level Maths, one learner repeatedly forgot to bring essential materials like notes, worksheets, or calculators to lessons, which limited hands-on revision and practice. These patterns often left students retracing steps or missing feedback opportunities during crucial assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Seaforth noticed that Jaida, a Year 11 student, has started questioning the strategies behind tricky exam problems instead of just following steps—showing she now understands not just how but why solutions work.

Jerry, in Year 8, recently shifted from rushing through algebra to carefully setting out his working and double-checking each answer, a big change from his earlier mistakes due to skipped steps.

Meanwhile, Clara (Year 12) has begun tackling past exam papers independently and now talks through her approach aloud when stuck, rather than quietly giving up or waiting for answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northern Beaches Secondary College Balgowlah Boys Campus.
