What I think is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow them to build confidence through their academic results through perseverance and hard work. Not only does this reflect in school, but this confidence in themselves is built through discipline aided by tutors translates to other facets of life, shaping their character…

Some of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to motivate them to think on their own, build their confidence and create an environment where they are not scared to ask questions. Being able to quickly modify my approach to meet the needs of each student is one of my skills as a tutor because I am aware that not everyone…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to let them learn on their own. I think the best tutors know how to balance their student's learning pace by guiding them only when they have to. This helps the student learn on their own, and, as a result, learn more efficiently. My strength as a tutor is how I communicate concepts. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to what they are asking, and targeting their weak areas within the prospective subject. By doing so the tutor should aim to tailor each lesson accordingly. I think my strengths as a tutor would be my perseverance, clarity when explaining concepts, the ability to identify a…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a space that they feel comfortable to be challenged and to learn in. It’s one thing to just help with answering questions but to encourage and motivate students to take on the difficult concepts even when they're working on their own, this is crucial and shows growth.…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a safe and encouraging environment where a student feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence over time. I truly believe that is how you're able to learn. As my ex-manager used to say, "there's no such thing as a stupid question" and that really resonated…

Any tutor, mentor, educator, or teacher all have something different to offer their students: but the goal is the same and it should be this: to help empower those who can't empower themselves in order to bring forth the best version of that individual into the world. It is through education, knowledge and the reciprocation of knowledge that…

The effective tutor aims way beyond just being a good tutor. It is essential tutors always point out the good achievements of students as much as they make note of their mistakes. Providing encouragement should go beyond the work completed in lessons and a tutor should often check in on how students are coping and provide positive encouragement…

Make them feel like asking questions is normal, not embarrassing. A lot of students already know what they don't understand , they just need a space where it's safe to say it out loud. Beyond that, I focus on building independent thinking rather than just drilling answers, so students can handle questions they haven't seen before when it counts. I…

Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. The tutoring sessions with Dominic are going very well. He has certainly helped Kailiana to gain confidence and skills in maths, while keeping a calm, friendly, and easy-going mood for the tutoring sessions. As any 8 year old does, Kailiana can get distracted from time to time, but Dominic has always taken this in stride, and been very creative in engaging with Kailiana in order to retain her attention. For example, there was one instance where she jumped up out of nowhere and decided to feed her goldfish in the middle of them trying to solve some questions about volume. Once she got back to the table Dominic asked her about her fish, and then changed the objects in the question they were solving to fish. He effectively got her back on track and engaged her attention in a warm and gentle way. Kailiana looks forward to her tutoring sessions, with is another testament to the good work Dominic has been doing with her.

Inside SeftonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alessandro worked on mastering division skills and identifying divisibility by numbers like 2, 3, and 6, using quick tricks for recognition.

For Year 8, Mia focused on algebraic techniques such as expanding and factorising expressions, along with revising the use of indices.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Olivia tackled co-ordinate geometry—finding gradients—and explored congruency in triangles through practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, shortcuts in working were common—"he often resorts to doing a lot mentally, and then gets lost in his working"—making it difficult to trace mistakes, especially with algebra and negative numbers.

Homework was frequently incomplete or rushed; when attempted last-minute, this left him "freaking out that he doesn't remember what to do right before the lesson."

For a Year 4 student tackling multi-digit multiplication, confusion arose from misplacing numbers in columns, as one tutor noted he "struggles with the placement of numbers in the equation for 2 by 2 digit multiplication," which led to repeated errors despite knowing the steps.

Recent Achievements

One Sefton tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who's begun catching his own mistakes during algebra and now fixes them independently—previously, he'd wait for hints before correcting errors.

In a recent high school session, another student surprised himself by recalling and confidently applying all four tests to prove triangle congruency, something he found confusing just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a Year 4 student who used to hesitate when faced with multiplication challenges has memorised both the 5 and 10 times tables and now spots number patterns on his own without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Primary School.
