I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to solve problems. To approach problems logically and critically so that they can confidently solve problems (whether it be a maths or a physics problem) independently. From personal experience, my strengths involve: - Teaching independent thinking and problem solving…

The most important thing I can do for a student is providing the tools and resources to be able to tackle problems independently, no matter the difficulty. To do this, it is important to design personalised methodologies that allow students to learn the basic knowledge, get familiar with some examples and then put into practice what was learned…

I consider student engagement in a topic is one of the most important things a tutor can encourage in a student, and as someone beginning a Masters in physics I have plenty of enthusiasm myself for learning maths and science. I think that my enthusiasm will encourage students to to develop an enthusiasm of their own for what they are learning, as…

Building students’ confidence and encouraging their own way of thinking are very important to me. When students feel confident and respected, they are more willing to express ideas, ask questions, and learn effectively. Making students understand concepts according to the way they think is one of my key strengths. I adapt my explanations to…

A teacher's job is not just to give a student knowledge. But it's to inspire their student to learn and seek knowledge and understanding themselves. The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for students at their bad times and not ridicule them. If a student has a bad time and cannot fully focus on studies, a tutor should help them and understand that its not the person but the situation that is leading to this. Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. Inside Shenton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on converting between proper and improper fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1000, as well as placing decimals accurately on a number line.

In Year 8, Emily revised integers and negative numbers alongside substituting values into simple algebraic expressions.

For Year 9, Sam focused on factorisation techniques and applying the first three index laws to simplify algebraic terms.

Recent Challenges

Jacob did not attempt the homework set for him last lesson, especially in advanced algebra and index laws, which limited progress with new topics.

In Year 10 Physics, skipping written diagrams made abstract problems harder to visualise and led to confusion when tackling free body questions.

For a Year 6 learner, not writing out working for fraction and subtraction tasks meant errors went unnoticed and wasted time retracing steps.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student's messy approach to telling time on clock faces made it difficult to spot where understanding broke down during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Shenton Park tutor recently noticed a big shift with Jacob in Year 10 Maths: after struggling to remember each step, he started writing out his full working for index law problems, which helped him finish homework faster and more accurately than before.

A senior student who previously hesitated to sketch graphs can now confidently draw derivatives and explain how they relate to the original function—something that used to cause confusion.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Pria has become much more proactive about telling her tutor which maths topics she finds tricky instead of guessing or staying quiet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosalie Primary School.
