As a tutor you can provide a child/student with a different outlook on their learning. For example, their school teacher may have explained it in a way that the child didn't particularly understand, and as a tutor you can give them a more unique and individual learning experience that they wouldn't get at school. Providing children with one-on-one…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

Other than imparting the lessons in school, I think being able to empathize with the students is key in effective teaching. As a matter of strategy, what I will do is to meet them where they are academically, then prepare a plan and implement it to be able to meet our goal(s). I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. Support, guide, motivate and teach the student until he don't understand. A tutor should get sense of satisfaction after his student gets satisfied. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

Inside SkyeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alyssia explored titration calculations in chemistry, working through molar ratios and using formulas like n = m/M and C Ă— V, as well as preparing for her exam with redox reactions and balancing equations.

In Year 10, Ben focused on quadratic equations—completing the square for more challenging problems and reviewing different forms of quadratics in preparation for his upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie revised univariate statistics by practicing calculations of mean, median, mode, range, and was introduced to interquartile range.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student often relied on reusing equation formats and prior solutions rather than reasoning independently through new problems—"he tended to follow the set process instead of thinking about why it works," as noted after algebra practice.

For a Year 12 chemistry session, another student preferred to check previous working before attempting unfamiliar questions, hesitating to push beyond known methods.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student was easily distracted during sessions and lacked a clear plan for what to focus on, which meant less time spent engaging with key tasks. This sometimes led to confusion or slow progress when faced with multi-step worded problems.

Recent Achievements

Alyssia started the session needing help with titration equations but finished able to solve mixed molar ratio problems independently, no longer waiting for hints before starting.

Alessandro, in Year 10 Maths, arrived fully prepared with specific questions and by the end was confidently linking roots and graphing cubics—something he'd previously found confusing.

Meanwhile, Lucy in Year 7 has moved from relying on prior examples to tackling new statistics questions on her own after just a bit of guidance, showing real initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Magill School.
