The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to respect their intellect. A tutor must always be careful not to break a student’s confidence. Sometimes, students may feel low for not being able to catch up to their friends. In such case, it is very important as a tutor to encourage the student and bring back his confidence. Childhood…

I believe that a tutor should be prepared to adapt to their students learning style to maximise their understanding. They must also always be up to date with changes in the syllabus and be able to explain the demands of the course. As a recent new HSC graduate, I have substantial experience with the new Advanced English and General Mathematics…

The most important thing for a tutor to provide to a student is confidence. Without implementing confidence into the student for the subject they are struggling with, success in the subject will be harder. This means I will ensure students understand the concepts of the subject by teaching them the basics to build their confidence. My strengths…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to set a good example. In many cases that I've seen, students tend to look up to tutors as role models, not just in education, but life in general. Coming from my own experience, I tend to rely on my tutors for more than just explaining to me a maths solution or discussing how to draft an…

The tutor must create an environment of trust and respect to foster the tutor-tutee relationship. This in turn will make the student feel more accountable to the tutor to do well. My greatest strength is my communication. I make a concerted effort to collaborate with my students when developing their learning plans. A strong focus on goal setting…

Growing up in an environment that nurture's learning and education, it is important for me as a tutor to instil within each student the power of education to inspire change and progress. Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not force them into studying and to not put too much pressure on them to understand a certain topic. I believe that I can teach them in a way I have been taught and make them understand a certain problem easily. And even if I fail to make them understand I study the problem…

The tutor should be able to teach more and better than what the student can learn at school. In my opinion, for a student to always be good at studying and getting good grades every time, the student has to master appropriate studying strategies. Hence, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to study "smartly" and be more productive. Moreover, in high school, I used to go to coaching centre…

Empathy is essential for a teacher. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if a student doesn’t understand a topic yet or feels behind academically. As a tutor it is vital that they are encouraging and always find solutions to help a student who may find a certain aspects of a subject difficult or they may not like. I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to truly understand them and their learning ways. For example, I am a visual learner and so I learn better using diagrams, colours and videos. But not everyone is a visual learner and so they might need other aids to help them learn concepts such as songs or textbooks. I…

Few viable things which a tutor can do to help the students are: a) Deliver to them motivational thoughts and constantly encouraging them to do well. b) Critically thinking about any difficulty which might pose a hurdle in the pathway of student's learning and bring-forth ways to mitigate it. The tutor must help the student improve in the subject they are teaching. This involves explaining things clearly so the student can understand and are thus enabled to tackle such questions and tasks on their own in the future. I also believe that the tutor must make the student feel comfortable around them. If it is possible to do without…

Inside South GranvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Favour reviewed mistakes from the 2020 Western Past Paper and tackled several questions from the 2019 paper, focusing on clarifying tricky concepts.

Year 12 student went through HSC depreciation questions and selected problems from the WME Trial 2023, addressing practical finance calculations.

Another Year 12 student worked on trigonometry with right-angled triangles and bearings, using textbook exercises to build confidence in applying these skills to exam-style scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 English, one student's essays showed frequent repetition and unclear connections between ideas—"he needs to use a greater variety of connectives in his writing"—making responses harder to follow under timed conditions.

In Year 10 Mathematics, a student often left out units in answers and sometimes forgot essential materials for lessons; as noted, "homework and materials should be brought to every lesson."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner hesitated to attempt more difficult fraction problems, sticking with familiar examples instead of challenging herself. This led to slower improvement on test-style questions requiring deeper understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Granville recently noticed a Year 12 student who, after previously missing marks for unclear essay structure, took feedback on board and began rewriting his thesis statements more thoughtfully, even re-reading completed essays for better analysis.

In another session, a high schooler prepping for the HSC started working with friends outside of lessons to prepare quotes and themes—showing much more initiative than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once hesitated to ask questions now actively seeks help whenever she's unsure about maths problems, instead of guessing or skipping them.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Auburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blaxcell Street Public School.
