A tutor not only acts as a source of information, but they should also be able to create a safe and comfortable environment for students to get their questions answered and receive support. Through my experience as a student leader, whose goal was to communicate ideas through the student body, I am highly comfortable in creating a safe space for…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build confidence in their students. This means not just helping them understand the material, but also encouraging them to believe in their own abilities. Creating a supportive and positive learning environment is crucial. As a tutor, I aim to be a mentor and guide, someone students feel…

Boosting their confidence in tackling problems they were once fearful of and guiding them to develop more holistically. I strongly believe that tutors should also make an effort to really understand their students deeply so as to help draw out and maximise their potential. I believe that every student has the ability to score As in their…

Moreover, the students must not be demotivated nor bored in the class to have the enthusiasm of learning and retain the knowledge. I am an easygoing tutor that is patient and also prideful in what I teach. I am committed to teach and provide knowledge however…

I believe the best thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to understand the student's concerns and being able to implement the best strategies accordingly. This way the student can achieve the most out of tutoring sessions. Likewise, having a positive and encouraging attitude is also significant to benefit the students learning. I…

Beyond providing knowledge, I believe a tutor can give good study habits for the students and personalized feedback that they can look back on in the long run. For me, tutoring was also the experience of learning and being able to train my understanding beyond just grasping the subject material. I can break concepts down to an understandable…

Allow them to understand I’m here to support them and grow their understanding in knowledge rather than add extra stress and judge them. I have tutored a range of students from year 2 to year 12. I have been in tutoring myself and have realised the stress sometimes tutoring can inflict on a student. My goal as a tutor is to try and allow the…

I think that it is important to be reliable for the student. This may in terms of maintaining regular sessions and also trying to understand their curriculum better. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence in their own ability to learn. When a student feels safe to say “I don’t get it†without feeling judged, the real…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
