A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. I am relatable as I am a recently graduated student and am continuing my studies at Monash University, studying a…

1. Build a strong personal relationship with the student to create the optimal learning environment where the student is comfortable to communicate as he wants with the tutor 2. A tutor can provide a rubric(concepts/ideas simplified into bullet points) and summarized notes so students can combat any questions asked 3. Set out goals for the…

I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a positive learning environment, identify a student's specific needs, and help them build both skills and confidence. A tutor should not only teach content but also develop good study habits and support students in becoming independent learners. One of my biggest strengths is being…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. Sometimes they know more than they think—they just need someone to encourage them and show them they’re capable. And remind students that learning is a process. A tutor should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small wins along the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is provide them with confidence. A tutor should establish a connection with their student in the sense they should make the effort to truly understand their student for their strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, a tutor should uphold patience with every student. That way, a student learning in a encouraging environment allows them to develop on their knowledge and skills more…

The most important concept of tutoring is that not only should the tutor act as a teacher but also provide motivation and encouragement to the student. The tutor should prove to the student that they can make progress with practise, discipline and smart study habits. Another important key skill is identifying a students weakness and nurturing it…

Inside SpringvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara worked on trigonometric ratios and similar triangles, using diagrams to solve for unknowns and apply similarity rules.

Year 10 student Jamie focused on consolidating knowledge of compound interest through textbook questions and tackled worded problems involving sales commissions and tax brackets.

For a younger learner in Year 6, Alex practised converting fractions to percentages as well as finding the percentage of a given amount within financial maths.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, a student's lab report writing was described as "a little hard to interpret at times," with formatting making conclusions unclear. In the same subject, short-answer exam sections moved slowly and explanations lacked precision—this left less time for extended responses under test conditions.

A Year 9 Maths student repeatedly relied on a calculator for division and multiplication ("she currently solely does long division"), which slowed problem-solving and blocked quick mental checks during class quizzes.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner often forgot materials like pencils and worksheets, making it harder to participate in hands-on tasks or follow along during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Springvale tutor noted a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on redox equations is now independently balancing full redox reactions and double-checking with oxidation numbers—something he previously found confusing.

Another high school student has shifted from silent guessing to actively talking through her approach on short-answer chemistry questions, clearly outlining her reasoning as she works.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who was hesitant about adding large numbers is now confidently using his fingers to add four-digit numbers without prompting, finishing problems that would have stalled him before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Springvale Rise Primary School-Springvale Road Campus.
