The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is guide that student to success, this can be achieved by listening and being attentive to the childs learning styles and needs. Patience and understanding. I believe that patience is one of the most important qualities to have as a tutor, this is because it can be very frustrating as a…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is engage them within a subject, keep them interested to learn more, and motivate students to do their absolute best. Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. A tutor must allow students to think for themselves and provide prompts which enable more critical and deeper thinking. I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

Local Reviews

Stephan has been tutoring my daughter for a couple of years now. He is approachable, professional and excellent tutor. Eliza has gained and maintained her confidence in Maths which is especially important in Year 12. Stephan helped her transition to Zoom tutoring last year when he couldn't come to our house and this was so successful they continued their sessions remotely. I highly recommend Stephan!

Inside St MorrisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Pranavi practised adding fractions with different denominators and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, using visual models to reinforce the process.

Year 7 student Milly worked on applying angle terminology, including supplementary and complementary angles, as well as revising operations with negative numbers for her test review.

For Year 10 student Harrison, the lesson focused on solving quadratic equations using the null factor law, with step-by-step practice on breaking down each equation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student hesitated to show all working when expanding brackets, which led to confusion about like terms and missed negative signs—she often expressed the answer verbally but struggled to write it on paper.

In Year 7 maths, another student sometimes misplaced digits in multi-step addition (e.g., placing the '3' from 309 in the thousands column), causing repeated calculation errors.

A Year 4 student skipped double-checking decimal placement during division by 1000s, leading to mistakes like moving the decimal only two places instead of three. These moments slowed progress and required extra time to clarify foundational concepts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Morris noticed Milly, a high school student, has become much more independent with angle classification—she can now work out even tricky reflex angles and solve for unknowns using supplementary and complementary rules after struggling before.

Harrison, also in high school, showed real growth in trigonometry; he started the session needing reminders but was later able to remember ratios and consistently show his working when finding side lengths.

Meanwhile, one younger student who previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly letting her tutor know when she's stuck, making it easier to target explanations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Norwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
