Whilst improving their grades is important, the most important thing a tutor can do is help their student find their love for learning, ensuring that they will push themselves to be curious. I can adapt my explanations well, if the way I am explaining something is not working for them I will try again in a different way, sometimes incorporating…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to guide them towards the right answer without spoon-feeding them so they are able to effectively find the answer by themselves. My strengths as a tutor include proficiency in the subject that I am teaching and patience with the student if they don't understand what I am trying to say so I…

I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to truly understand them their learning pace, strengths, and weaknesses and tailor teaching accordingly. A tutor should create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where students feel worthy, valued, and comfortable asking questions. By encouraging curiosity and celebrating small…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. Poor tutors…

A tutor should be well-prepared in ensuring students completely comprehend subject that is being taught. A tutor should be prepared to answer all sorts of question asked by the students. An excellent tutor should be genuinely interested in the students understanding. He/she should not be afraid to acknowledge anything they do not know. Instead,…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Once they feel safe, the students can ask any question and tutor can help them and fill their knowledge gap. My strength would be perseverance, adaptability, and emphaty. I would try and give…

The most important things a tutor can do are:- * Provide enough explanation until the student is able to develop his/her own approach to a question and logically solve it step by step, while understanding the reason behind each step. *A tutor should also be willing to solve any kind of doubt and do that as soon as possible, since dealing…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

I think the most important thing is to help a student build confidence, not just get through a problem. If they believe they can’t do it, nothing else works. I had self doubt right before my HSC exams, so I truly know how important confidence is and how strongly it affects a person’s performance. Second is to teach them how to think through a…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

I believe it is important for a tutor to provide a wide range of examples for students to be able to grasp certain concepts. Furthermore, applications in the real world of the various concepts the students are learning are incredibly valuable, as it gives them a greater sense of purpose, knowing well what they are studying is not just to tick the…

-I believe it is a tutor's duty to make sure the student understands the concept thoroughly and precisely as possible,. -A tutor can always jump to the basics of a particular concept if it is not clear for the student. Inside St PaulsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student William worked through travel graphs and measures of central tendency in the Data topic, then tackled linear equations and Pythagoras' theorem using real-world problems.

For Year 8, Paolo focused on advanced algebra skills including collecting like terms and factorising expressions, alongside practice with perfect square formulas.

Another Year 8 student revised rates and ratios, applying these to exam-style questions, and completed challenging surface area problems for composite solids.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student was hesitant to structure written responses in maths, which led to confusion mid-question and second-guessing of chosen methods—"he needs to take a moment before answering the question."

In Year 11, a student left some homework incomplete or skipped unfamiliar questions, especially when magic squares or negative coefficients appeared; this meant gaps in understanding persisted between lessons.

A Year 4 learner often got distracted by drawing instead of focusing on set problems, requiring frequent redirection.

Meanwhile, a senior biology student showed hesitancy asking questions and reviewing errors after feedback, sometimes missing opportunities for deeper revision.

Recent Achievements

One St Pauls tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions; now, he's actively bringing his own challenging problems to sessions and breaking them down step by step.

A Year 8 student recently made a breakthrough with algebra—after struggling last term, she corrected her own mistakes during practice and moved on to harder equations without prompting.

In primary school, one student who used to rush through maths tasks is now pausing before answering, taking time to plan out his responses more thoughtfully than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marcellin College.
