I believe that is to impart the knowledge he/she has to the student about a certain subject, in such way and manner that is very considerate to the mental and emotional well-being and capacity of the student. It is important that the tutor knows his/her student’s capabilities, so the tutor will have a basis on how he/she will tackle the…

Inspire a genuine passion for the subject, rather than just learning for the sake of school. When students find enjoyment and appreciation in what they're studying, learning becomes easier, and this mindset will benefit them with anything they need to learn in the future. Patience and making learning fun. I take the time to understand each…

Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. I believe that knowing how to apply the content is just as important as knowing the content in order to maximise marks. I think a strength of mine is reading questions and quickly…

I think an important thing for a tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. I am very patient with children and I like to come up with different activities so that the…

Tutors have the important role of helping build a student's confidence and guide them to becoming more efficient learners. A tutor should also create a safe, non-judgemental learning space for students to grow academically. From experience helping peers and my younger brother with school, I found that a strength I have is simplifying concepts to…

First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
