The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. This demonstrates the foundation of their basics and will take them a long way regardless of their chosen field. I generally try to explain concepts with various analogies instead of just showing the proper…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build a good relationship so the student feels confident and secure. While education is paramount, a student who feels unsafe or stressed is more likely to perform poorly and absorb less information, so I believe that being someone the student is comfortable around in turn leads to…

I believe encouraging progress and development is more important than emphasis on getting the correct answers. This ensures an actual understanding of concepts and more effective retention of information I think that I am extremely patient and a good communicator. Communication in tutoring is key, as no two students are the same, and the tutor has…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is understand the student as an individual, not just focus on improving their grades. A good tutor should build mutual respect and trust, identify the student's strengths and areas for improvement, and help them develop confidence and independent learning skills. Academic progress matters,…

Help them learn in a different way! Help them see things from a different perspective! As a Queer non-binary writer, I can introduce them to new thoughts and ideas around certain traditional aspects of writing and reading. What I want is for my students to walk away with even more understanding of their certain topic/study area and that they…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. With students, a tutor should not only be considered a teacher but also a friend who they can inquire about topics and issues which a tutor has already experienced and can be an assistance of. My strengths are a…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

Creating a supportive and respectful environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A good tutor should also be a good listener to each student, understand their struggles and guide them towards finding the solutions rather than simply giving them the answers. It is also important to encourage and motivate…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. I think it is important for tutors to show patience and understanding towards students. It can be frustrating when one struggles to understand a new concept and I want to ensure that the student finds enjoyment in their work rather than a sense of dread toward it. Therefore, I highly emphasize an approach of patience to foster safe and enjoyable…

1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. Reviewing the fundamentals with the students. This means not jumping to advanced topics with the students when they might need a little refresher on the subject. In math, it is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence and strategies to tackle problems even when you, as a tutor, are not there. Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
