The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence and foster a growth mindset. Beyond imparting knowledge and academic skills, a tutor plays a critical role in nurturing a student's self-belief and belief in their own abilities. By providing encouragement, support, and positive reinforcement, a tutor can empower…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student include: Being able to communicate to the student in a way which their brain can understand the content best such as visually for example. Secondly being patient is a key factor because you dont want the student to be stressed or anxious but want them to be calm and…

The benefit that distinguishes a tutor from a classroom teacher is how a tutor is able to tailor the learning experience such that each student is best fitted according to how they learn. This means the tutor adjusts to the student's pace, learning style, and knowledge gaps. Thus the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to properly…

Changing a students mindset and reigniting their passion for learning. Some students can lose belief in themselves and don’t know their true ability to learn and apply knowledge. Getting that spark back in them and making them become confident in their own ability can be very rewarding and can make learning fun again. I’m a good listener, I…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to support the student providing them confidence to tackle the task in front of them. Second to this I think is to provide them a roadmap of how to deal with a situation where they don't know the answer or the approach to the question. Teaching that not knowing the answer to the question is ok and…

Great question — and honestly, what matters most depends a bit on the student’s needs, but here are some core things that I think every great tutor should do: 1. Create a Safe, Supportive Space A tutor should make students feel comfortable asking any question without fear of judgment. Learning only happens when students feel safe to say,…

To listen to the students' needs. Once you understand someone's problem, working with them to fix it is a lot easier, and this applies to education as well. Initially, he/she must understand the background (educational / intellectual) of the student(s). Moreover, need to understand on where the student is struggling and what he/she wants to achieve. It will give a tutor a great perspective on when and how to start. Then, develop a lesson plan accordingly. Be the guide but not a helper of a student. It…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is encourage their students. The crucial factor a tutor can assist student is show them where to look as most students will have their own way of finding the direction. What I mean by that is teach and make them understand, give them multiple approach of solving an equation, and later they will choose what best suits them. I would say my strength will be the ability to relate…

Local Reviews

Dion is actually excited about Maths again and told me the other day I really like Maths now, after spending the majority of this year hating it and feeling down on himself because he just couldn’t understand some of the strands and considered himself to be really bad at it, even though his results in NAPLAN and school reports did not reflect this, it was just that he had lost all confidence. So we are so excited for him, that he’s gained that confidence back and he thoroughly looks forward to Nav coming every week. So just after 2 weeks, I want to say how beyond happy we all are with Nav and Ezy Math as an entire organisation. Your correspondence has been very thorough and extremely helpful with lots of great tips and explanations. You’ve managed to turn this Maths learning experience from a negative one to a positive in just a couple of weeks. We can’t wait to see what great success Dion can achieve with the help of Nav.

Inside Sylvania WatersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Diyian focused on multiplication and long division as well as fractions and decimals, using practical examples from schoolwork.

For Year 9, Hayley worked through past exam questions in trigonometry and reviewed her errors from previous papers to strengthen understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Shayan practiced probability concepts and statistics, completing sample test questions involving fractions and division for targeted skill-building.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, one student often avoided writing out full working, especially on subtraction and division tasks; "he just wrote the answer without steps," making it harder to catch calculation slips or review mistakes later.

A Year 9 learner showed low motivation after tough exam questions—leaving several unfinished, as noted: "She didn't do any work that week again."

In Year 11, a student relied mainly on familiar problems for revision and hesitated to attempt unseen HSC-style questions, which meant less progress with challenging content.

Missed homework and incomplete classwork have also made it difficult for students to track improvement over time.

Recent Achievements

A Sylvania Waters tutor noticed Hayley, a high school student, now writes her own topic notes to revisit tricky formulas—a shift from relying solely on explanations. She's also begun tackling questions she previously got wrong independently, which is new for her.

Another high schooler, Shayan, has started reading questions more carefully before answering and improved at selecting the best response rather than rushing—something he struggled with earlier in the term.

For Year 3, Violet recently began to grasp multiplication and division basics after finding them confusing last month; this time, she completed a set of problems without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sylvania Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Taren Point Public School.
