I believe a tutor should be confident in his/her abilities and express enthusiasm in teaching the student. A tutor should be honest and upfront about the student's misconceptions and errors and offer advice in a calm and helpful tone. A tutor should be able to share some of his/her own experiences to deepen the connection with the student. A tutor…

The most important things I can do as a tutor are to foster a deep understanding of the subject, build confidence, and make learning enjoyable. By personalising lessons and offering compassionate support, I help students overcome challenges and develop a genuine interest in their studies. When students enjoy learning and feel confident, high marks…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share their passion for learning, helping them view education as an exciting adventure rather than just another task. I try to make learning feel like a journey full of discoveries. For example, when my little sister struggles with a tough math problem, I connect it to her…

A good tutor should be all about building up a student's confidence, giving them helpful feedback, and providing personalized support. Boosting a student's self-belief is important because it makes them more motivated to learn. Giving feedback that's not just critical but also positive helps them see their strengths and areas to work on. And…

I think the most important things are patience, as well as the ability to give them self-confidence in a subject. Students can vary in the amount of time it takes for them to understand something, and it is always essential that a tutor is patient and willing to help them out whenever needed. Everyone can make mistakes, and I will always make sure…

Any tutor needs to know that learning can't be forced. What's important is for us to help them to ignite the flames of passion to learn a subject through a fun and interactive session. Which ultimately, helps them to better understand everyday life by applying what they learned. Like how everything can be formulated into equations and how food…

A tutor's job isn't to be a second teacher's to be a bridge. The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence by turning complexity into something manageable. That means creating an environment where mistakes aren't failures but stepping stones, where questions are welcomed, and where the student feels supported enough to try, think,…

I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

They must be able to relate to the student's situation and current understanding of topics/content. This is the only way tutors can identify what student's need to work and create methods for them to see real improvement. First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is not only passing on the knowledge to the student but to also activate the student’s desire to learn by themselves. This includes the desire to search for the answer and to overcome the problems. We are not spoon feeding the student the information. There is an old saying “Give a child a…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. To be called a succesfull tutor, one need to instill interest to their students to study during their own time, because we only meet them once or twice a week and most of the time they have to learn by themselves. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become an understanding tutor. There is no point of forcing a student to learn something that they have no interest at. EzyMath Tutoring has been a wonderful experience for us. It was easy to organise in my busy schedule and convenient as the tutor comes to us at time that works. My son connected with his tutor from the get go and it was great to know EziMath Tutoring are always supportive with any questions I had. I thought the fees were very reasonable.

Inside TamaramaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Paolo worked on differentiating equations to find stationary points and applied the product, quotient, and chain rules to various functions, as well as tackling definite and indefinite integration for area under curves.

Year 10 lessons with Emily included graphing trigonometric functions using the unit circle and breaking down formulas like Asin(nx+b)+C, plus exploring properties of cubics and hyperbolas through hands-on graphing exercises.

For a Year 8 student, recent sessions focused on mean, median, range, and interquartile range in statistics, alongside algebraic simplification involving unknowns in denominators.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly arrived without completed homework, so lesson time was diverted to catching up rather than advancing ("homework from the previous week could not be checked as he could not find it").

In Year 11, a student avoided writing out working in unit conversion problems—opting to show only final answers. As a tutor noted, "he is only providing a final answer which is bad practice," making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings and reinforce correct methods.

For another senior student, relying on memorizing steps instead of understanding (conversion tasks) meant new question types felt unfamiliar and slowed progress during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Tamarama tutor noticed Jessy, a senior student, finally connecting tricky calculus concepts—after previously struggling with the product and quotient rules, she completed several differentiation questions independently, even handling inverse trig functions for the first time.

In another session, Tobey (Year 9) demonstrated a clear shift: he used to need step-by-step help with ratio word problems but now solves financial maths questions on his own and checks his work for errors without prompting.

Meanwhile, Lucas made tangible progress in algebra; after reviewing past mistakes on an exam paper together, he corrected every solution himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bondi Public School.
