I think it is important for a chemistry tutor to help students feel engaged and motivated towards the subject they are learning which can be achieved through an upbeat and cooperative environment. As a tutor, there should always be a focus on encouraging students especially at times they may feel demotivated. By maintaining a positive attitude and…

A tutor needs to teach a student, obviously. But more importantly, a chemistry tutor needs to empower a student. To make them break through barriers they wouldn’t have thought were possible, to achieve their potential, plus a little more. Tutors should also be more personalised, not so just a second teacher. Tutors should recognise why this…

I believe to explain a concept that the student can understand is paramount in the role of a chemistry tutor. For this to be done the student needs to comprehend the simple skills that leads up to the final difficult concept. If a tutor is able to explain this complex concept by explaining the simple skills and breaking down the concept in a…

Always be available to listen to any questions/problems that the student may have. As well as always making sure they completely understand something before they move on. Also, making the student trust you so they feel they can talk to you about any question no matter how stupid they think it is. I feel I can 'dumb' things down well, if someone is…

Students spend a major part of a day in school. Many children are unable to get the most of it due to time-constraints and lack of individual attention in a class. However, there are a few students who maintain attention and focus in a classroom environment. Reason is they are more prepared than the rest. If a child follows what is happening in…

To help students understand the basic concepts in whatever they have to study and help them develop a deeper, more relatable understanding. It is also important for me as a chemistry tutor to serve as a good role model for students. I try to make concepts easier for students to understand. The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to not spoon-feed the student. School is about learning to tackle challenges and problems, not necessarily about just passing or just scoring good grades. As a tutor, you are there to ensure you equip the student with the right tools and show them how to use those tools. I…

I consider an improvement in confidence incredibly significant to a child's attitude to learning. If a student is confident in their abilities to learn a subject, then they will be more likely to put effort into correcting their mistakes. This confidence and ability to recognise improvement will directly and positively affect the student's self…

A tutor can bring in enjoyment into students even when they study. Most of the students don't enjoy study time the main reason being they don't understand certain concepts and find it hard. But a chemistry tutor can explain that to students in a way they understand bring in interest thereby the enjoyment factor into it. I have great patience, good…

Inside TappingTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ava focused on understanding gradients and the basics of straight-line graphs, using visual examples to clarify slope.

Year 10 student Liam tackled trigonometric ratios and right-angled triangle problems, reinforcing concepts with practice questions from recent classwork.

For a Year 6 student, Chloe worked through identifying 10% and 20% of amounts in worded money problems and practiced giving change during shopping list activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 mathematics, one student repeatedly forgot to double-check negatives and confused the rules for 'and'/'or' in probability questions; as a tutor noted, "some careless mistakes can be fixed by double-checking his work."

During a Year 12 algebra session, skipping written steps led to missed signs and confusion when expanding brackets.

In a Year 4 session on telling time, anxiety about getting answers wrong caused hesitation—even when she knew the method.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's test performance suffered from distractions in noisy environments, despite demonstrating strong understanding during quieter tutoring sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Tapping noticed a real shift with one Year 11 student who had been averaging around the class mark all year but recently scored about 16% above average on her maths exam—she'd struggled to organise her investigations before, but this time produced much clearer written sections and nailed right-angled trigonometry questions.

In another session, a Year 9 student who usually hesitated to ask for help began pausing mid-task to clarify confusing steps instead of guessing, which meant he solved four-digit addition problems independently by the end.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner confidently counted money using different note combinations without guidance for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Joondalup Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tapping Primary School.
