I think a tutor's primary role is to simplify complex concepts, adapt to individual needs, and foster confidence. Encouraging critical thinking, setting goals, and providing a positive atmosphere are crucial for independent learning. I believe my strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to break down difficult ideas into manageable steps, making it…

I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. My strengths are my simplistic and analogy-based approach to explaining concepts, and my emphasis on exam technique that allows students to feel…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

For me, I consider giving them the knowledge and confidence to be able to step out of their comfort zone to achieve something previously unachievable the most important thing. Sometimes, a tutor is a guiding mentor, you provide them with stories, knowledge and experience. Then, the student would be able to utilize that knowledge and build a good…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate a student's success, whether it is big or small. It builds a student's confidence and motivation to keep learning. For example, I would acknowledge their success or completion of goal right away with specific praise, like "I'm really proud of how you stayed focused on that…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. This will boost their confidence in being able to answer harder questions that require this skill. Particularly for maths, the harder questions are situated in Q15 and Q16. Attaining marks in this…

I believe the key traits in tutoring children are to always have a calm demeanor and also be open-minded about new ideas and methods to conduct a lesson. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. Samantha, Tennyson Point

Inside Tennyson PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Amber worked on her Chemistry worksheet focused on radioactive decay and also reviewed chemical bonding for an upcoming assessment.

Year 10 student Imogen practised solving algebraic equations and changing the subject of formulas, using guided examples from her maths text.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Michael concentrated on logarithms in mathematics and motion in one dimension for physics, working through problems to strengthen understanding of both topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in mathematics often worked out answers mentally rather than setting out clear, step-by-step working on paper—he tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working out, one tutor noted.

This habit made it harder to spot small calculation errors, especially in algebra and inequalities, and meant revision was less effective later.

Meanwhile, a senior economics student had incomplete notes for case study topics like financial ratios, making exam preparation challenging when linking concepts under time pressure.

In both cases, organization and visible process steps limited recall during tests.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Tyler had previously struggled with algebraic fractions but now independently works through complex problems, applying skills from earlier lessons without prompting.

A Year 11 chemistry student who often hesitated to try questions solo has started completing most chemical reaction exercises on her own during sessions, only asking for help when truly needed.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to avoid multiplying and dividing negative numbers is now confidently using number lines and finishing related worksheets each week. Last session, she solved every question without skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gladesville Public School.
