I believe that as a tutor, the crucial things that I must always do for my students include: - identify their weakness by thoroughly observing their performances in various tasks - help them improve on their weakness by consistent practice, not rigorous, but consistent - help set milestones for every student which challenge their weaknesses and…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a positive learning environment, and tailor explanations to their individual needs. It's crucial to help students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as this is when real learning happens. As a tutor, I think my strengths lie…

For me, the most important part of tutoring is helping students build confidence while preparing for their exams. I also love going beyond the textbook, sharing life lessons, practical skills, and ways of thinking that help them grow both academically and personally. One of my strengths as a tutor is my ability to teach students across a wide age…

The tutor should be able to explain to the student the concept properly to the point where the student fully understands how to do different examples of a question by themselves. I believe that the tutor should not do the question for the students but explain the key ideas needed for the question to encourage the student to answer it themselves. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while providing…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in their own ability to succeed. A tutor has the power to inspire and guide academic understanding, with which comes a student's confidence and motivation towards that subject. By forming a positive relationship with tailored lessons, a tutor can create an environment…

A tutor can encourage a student that they can do it. There is no word as no. Teacher's need to imbibe confidence in students especially those who are failing to acheive and give them a reason to do well in their studies. Teacher's need to be patient as well. Understand the student, be patient with them and rather than becoming the student's boss, become their leader/role model and guide them towards their goals. A tutor should also have a growth mindset with his students and always be positive not letting his students drop their heads. I'm very patient and I also completed a Psychology internship in a…

Being able to listen to what the student thinks and needs is the best way to understand the situation and therefore opt for the best path to follow. I tend to be patient and understanding of different people needs so that tutoring is not only delivering information in a one sided way, but more of a cooperative…

A tutor should educate a student in the required content and keeping the student engaged, whilst still ensuring that the session is enjoyable, and fulfilling. To achieve this, a tutor should obviously be diligent in teaching, which includes preparing content and lessons beforehand, as well as consistently asking the student for feedback to guide…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

Ensuring that they grasp the knowledge taught is the most crucial thing for me. If they are able to teach it to others, I feel that I have done my job as a tutor. The key benefit of a tutor is that they can provide individualised support for a student. Tutors have the unique position of being able to become very familiar with their students' understanding of subjects, and employ the most effective strategies to improve their learning. While teachers at students' schools often may not be able to allocate…

Samantha, Tennyson Point

Inside Tennyson PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Amber worked on her Chemistry worksheet focused on radioactive decay and also reviewed chemical bonding for an upcoming assessment.

Year 10 student Imogen practised solving algebraic equations and changing the subject of formulas, using guided examples from her maths text.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Michael concentrated on logarithms in mathematics and motion in one dimension for physics, working through problems to strengthen understanding of both topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in mathematics often worked out answers mentally rather than setting out clear, step-by-step working on paper—he tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working out, one tutor noted.

This habit made it harder to spot small calculation errors, especially in algebra and inequalities, and meant revision was less effective later.

Meanwhile, a senior economics student had incomplete notes for case study topics like financial ratios, making exam preparation challenging when linking concepts under time pressure.

In both cases, organization and visible process steps limited recall during tests.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Tyler had previously struggled with algebraic fractions but now independently works through complex problems, applying skills from earlier lessons without prompting.

A Year 11 chemistry student who often hesitated to try questions solo has started completing most chemical reaction exercises on her own during sessions, only asking for help when truly needed.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to avoid multiplying and dividing negative numbers is now confidently using number lines and finishing related worksheets each week. Last session, she solved every question without skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gladesville Public School.
