The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young…

Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a…

The most important thing I think is for the tutor to build confidence in a student. To do this, I believe continual encouragement is required and something I always aim to do. Patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. I am also very persistent and will try a variety of methods that will allow the student to see concepts from a variety…

I believe the most important thing that a chemistry tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. For me, I found it the most helpful when a tutor was able to provide formulas or structures for solving problems, which allowed me to tackle whatever questions I was tasked me. As a student, I have a love of learning and an innate…

Build a relationship with the student. If you can make the sessions enjoyable then the student will be more likely to engage and try to improve. Patience, lots of students don't understand the concepts straight away and therefore you need to be patient with them to help them achieve their goals. Adaptability, every student learns in different…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to…

The most important thing of a chemistry tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students,…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. I am good at going slowly, step by step, through difficult concepts to break them down into understandable…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Hence, you must adjust your method of teaching for each individual student. Some people are auditory, visual or written learners, some like algebra, calculus, or trigonometry. Moreover, if you are…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a chemistry tutor's action, as it…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. I think a chemistry tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

Local Reviews

Very easy to deal with. Lots of great tutors and they go to great lengths to match the right tutor to the students needs. If for any reason the tutor selected does not 'fit' with the students requirements, Ezymath are more than happy to keep trying alternate tutors until they find the right match.

Inside ToorakTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Raef worked through dividing large numbers by 8 using a breakdown strategy, compared fractions and decimals, and solved number pattern problems in his maths homework.

Year 8 student Lucette focused on surface area calculations as well as angles, trigonometry, and Pythagoras' theorem, tackling practice questions to reinforce understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Maya practiced solving linear equations and inequalities along with simplifying algebraic expressions using index laws.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student hesitated to write out full working for maths problems, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed details—especially in multi-step word questions.

During a Year 8 algebra session, work was messy and unstructured; the tutor noted that "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

One Year 10 student did not complete homework before the lesson and struggled to recall last week's concepts, making it harder to tackle new material.

In another instance, a senior student forgot formulas due to scattered notes and weak organization. This left her searching for basics instead of building on them.

Recent Achievements

In a recent Toorak tutoring session, a Year 8 student who used to freeze up with linear equations began working through problems without hesitation, even explaining his logic aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student—who'd often skip checking her answers—took the initiative to review and correct every question on her latest maths test, catching errors herself for the first time.

For a younger learner in Year 3, games and flashcards have transformed times tables from anxiety into something he looks forward to; last week, he confidently tackled division questions that once made him nervous.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Geelong Grammar School - Toorak campus.
