The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. This means explaining concepts clearly, adapting to their learning style, and creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. A good tutor should also encourage problem-solving rather than just giving…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. A good tutor should be supportive, patient, and willing to adapt to the student’s learning style. It’s also…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. My strengths are my patience, dedication, and being able to reframe how I teach something. For example, I may use the student's personal interests to explain a concept and make it…

I believe a tutor's most important role is to help students develop confidence and become independent learners. While improving grades is important, lasting success comes from understanding concepts rather than memorising procedures. A good tutor should create a positive learning environment, encourage curiosity, and teach students how to think…

A tutor not only helps the student get better grades in examination but also helps them understand the core concepts of the subjects that can be applied to everyday life and also encourages a balance between work and play. A good tutor should always be patient and supportive while also making classes engaging. Maintaining a positive attitude not only strengthens the teacher-student relationship but also boosts students' confidence in their learning. An engaging class is essential, as students need a break from the overwhelming amount of content they are absorbing. …

Make a student feel supported and safe. Whether the student wants the top marks or just wants to pass, they need to feel like someone genuinely wants to help. I think the beauty of tutoring is its more personal than teaching so a student can truely feel supported. My empathy and passion. I really enjoy learning but I also recognise that not…

I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I believe that to teach a student well, you must be willing to listen to them, and understand how they learn so that you can provide the best learning experience as possible. I want to be a tutor so that I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. In my opinion, making the student feel comfortable is key to establishing a healthy and optimistic relationship with learning. The teaching space needs to be free of judgement and should feel inclusive. A one-size-fits-all method of teaching disregards every student's unique circumstances so the tutor should make an active effort to empathise with…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. I believe a good tutor has the ability to transcend their role as a tutor and become a role model for their students. Further, helping a student overcome their fears or challenges for a particular subject is incredibly helpful. I am able to connect with my students and understand their issues from their perspective. This allows me to curate my…

Inside TravancoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Max focused on multiplying and dividing mixed numbers, converting between improper fractions and decimals, and practised placing decimal points accurately during operations.

In Year 8, Lola tackled triangle side length and angle problems using trigonometric formulae like arcsin, as well as analysing literary themes and preparing essay arguments for her assessment on Brave New World.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Max reviewed substitution into graph formulae, worked through coordinate geometry questions involving negative number laws and exponentials, and reinforced his understanding by reading textbook problems aloud.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often skipped back-checking their work on fractions and division, leading to repeated errors—he tries to add and subtract denominators, as he always forgets to first find a common denominator.

In VCE Chemistry, exam revision was left until the last minute, causing stress and limited time for consolidation.

Meanwhile, in Year 10 English, another student hesitated to express opinions in essays and defaulted to quoting texts instead of expanding on their own ideas. This pattern resulted in less developed arguments during class discussions and slower essay planning under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Travancore noticed Violet, a senior student, has started coming to each session with her own targeted questions and is now quick to ask for clarification when she's unsure—something she hesitated to do before.

In Year 9 maths, Max showed new independence by reading content himself first and diving straight into homework without prompting, which made the lesson more productive than usual.

For a younger student, Matthew breezed through a reading comprehension task that used to slow him down, showing how his practice is making these activities much smoother.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Flemington Primary School.
